Milwaukee Wave United News Release
Milwaukee, WI â The Portland Timbers were able to outlast Milwaukee Wave United as Byron Alvarez scored the game-winner in the 90th minute to secure the 4-3 win over Milwaukee at PGE Park. Alvarez and McKinely Tennyson, the Timbers leading scorers each converted two goals to help Portland secure the victory.
Wave United battled back from a 3-1 deficit off of goals by John Ball in the 57th minute and by Chad Dombrowski in the 83rd minute. But in the 85th minute, Ball was issued his second yellow card of the match, an automatic ejection, forcing Milwaukee to play a man down for the rest of the match and pushing the momentum back in favor of Portland.
Milwaukee opened up the scoring in the 16th minute when Josh Timbers took a pass from Todd Dusosky and was able to place the ball in the top corner, just out of reach of Portland goalkeeper, Joshua Saunders. The goal is the first this year for Timbers and the fifth in his A-League career. The assist was the first of three on the night for Dusosky, who is Wave United's leading scorer with 18 points.
The score silenced the Portland fans, who were still reeling from an earlier goal that was called off due to a Portland foul. Jake Sagare had taken a shot that Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin had no chance of stopping, but McKinley Tennyson was called for a push in the back.
Portland came roaring back and scored two quick goals to take the lead 2-1 midway through the first half. Alvarez scored his first goal of the contest just two minutes after Timbers put Milwaukee ahead 1-0 as he blew the ball past Larkin. The goal was the eighth for Alvarez, who has scored in eight of the Timbers last ten games.
Tennyson then converted two goals scoring in the 25th and 48th minutes. The first goal came when he was able to convert the Alvarez header that had deflected off the post. Tennyson's second goal came just minutes into the second half as he was able to push the ball past Larkin for his ninth goal of the season.
The Timbers continue to hold on to second place in the Pacific Division, improving to 10-8-0 (27 points). Wave United drops their third game in a row on the road, and falls to 7-7-0 (21 points).
Milwaukee will wrap up their four game road trip next weekend with games in Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Wave United will take on the Blast on Friday, July 18 at 7:35 p.m. before traveling to Cincinnati to face the Riverhawks on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
Wave United's next home game will be Wednesday July 23 when they take on the Milwaukee Bavarians in Wave United's first action in Open Cup play. The game will be played at Uihlein Soccer Park, with a scheduled game time start of 7:30 p.m. Call the Wave/Wave United Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for tickets or more information, or check out www.milwaukeewaveunited.com.
