Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers trade of Ivan Rodriguez to the New York Yankees Wednesday had a ripple effect throughout the organization, all the way to West Michigan. The Tigers announced today that Whitecaps catcher Adrian Casanova will be promoted to High-A Lakeland while catcher Angel Flores is back on the Whitecaps roster from short-season Oneonta. The Whitecaps also add RHP Lauren Gagnier to the roster.

Gagnier began the 2008 season with the Whitecaps and made 10 starts with a 1-5 record and 4.07 ERA. The Santa Cruz, Calif. native originally moved to Triple-A Toledo on June 3 for a spot start, but continued pitching for a total of seven starts. While in Toledo, Gagnier went 3-3 with a 5.66 ERA, and on July 10 he debuted with Double-A Erie where he had four starts. He finished 2-2 at Erie with a 12.91 ERA.

Casanova's latest move is the third time he's left West Michigan and his first stint with Lakeland this season. The former Clemson University standout hit .193 (17-for-88) with one home run and nine RBI in 29 games with the Whitecaps. Casanova also spent a brief time this season with Double-A Erie (two games) and Triple-A Toledo, hitting a combined .267 (4-for-15) between the two stops.

Flores spent a month and a half with the Whitecaps before being sent to Oneonta on July 15. He batted .267 (8-for-30) with one home run and two RBI in nine games with Oneonta. Flores signed with the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on Oct. 20, 2004 and is in his fourth season of professional baseball.

The Whitecaps roster remains at 25 players. For more information on the roster move, please contact the Whitecaps PR Department at 616-726-7052.
