Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, but fell 6-4 to the Hudson Valley Renegades on Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.

Despite the loss, the Tigers remained a half game up on the Vermont Lake Monsters in the Stedler Division with just four days left in the season because of a Vermont 3-2 loss to the Staten Island Yankees.

In the bottom of the ninth inning at Dodd, with Connecticut trailing 6-2, Dean Green led off with a single. Two batters later he was driven in on a Jeff Holm RBI double. Matt Perry's base hit put runners on the corners, when Patrick Leyland hit a sac fly to make it a 6-4 game. However, with Perry on base, Javier Azcona, who represented the would-be tying run, flew out to the warning track in left field to end the game and preserve the Renegades victory.

The Renegades broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the fourth inning. Juniel Querecuto led off the frame with a base hit and moved up to second on a passed ball. Matt Rice then slapped an RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Gerardo Olivares giving Hudson Valley a 2-0 lead.

Connecticut tied it up at two in the sixth inning. After a one-out base hit from Eugenio Suarez, Tyler Collins lied a double into left field to put runners at second and third.

Green then ripped a single to score both runners and tie it.

Hudson Valley though would come right back to regain the lead in the top of the seventh. Clemente Mendoza, out of the bullpen, got the leadoff man out before hitting Chris Winder with a pitch, giving up a single to Cesar Guillen and hitting Brian Bryles to load the bases. Melvin Merecedes then was brought on for the Tigers. He got Querecuto to fly out on the infield, but Jeff Malm smashed a two-run double and Rice added an RBI base hit to put the Renegades up 5-2.

They added another run on a Malm RBI single in the ninth to take a 6-2 lead before the Tigers rally fell short in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers will play the rubber match of the three-game series with Renegades tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM at Dodd Stadium.
