New England Riptide News Release
The New England Riptide took the field at home Saturday August 19 for the last game of the 2006 regular season and the final game in a series of four with the Texas Thunder. The Riptide could not pull out a victory dropping the game to the Thunder 3-1. Texas designated player Kim Nesloney put the Thunder on the board in the top of the second. Karrie Rider led off with a base hit and a single to center by Clare Burnum put two on for Texas. Lindsay Gardner laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners into scoring position. Lindy Winkler caught a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nesloney that was just deep enough for Rider to tag up and score giving Texas an early 1-0 lead. The Thunder rolled on increasing their lead in the top of the fourth. Burnum doubled to the centerfield wall with two outs. A single to center by Gardner was all it took to drive Burnum home increasing the Texas lead 2-0. Danielle Henderson came in to relieve Riptide starting pitcher Jocelyn Forest in the top of the fifth with no outs and runners on first and third. Lyndsey Angus prevented the Thunder from increasing their lead picking up a squeeze bunt off the bat of Nina Lindenberg and put the tag on Dahlberg at home. Henderson quickly put the inning away with consecutive strikeouts against Kelly Osborn and Rocky Spencer. Winkler cut the Texas lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. Lisa Iancin led off with a base hit and Scavone was handed a walk by Texas pitcher Christa Williams putting two on for New England. Destiny Frankenstein laid down a sacrifice bunt but an error on the play by first baseman Rider allowed her to reach safely, loading the bases. A single by Winkler scored Iancin making it 2-1 Thunder. Texas increased their lead in the top of the seventh. Kristen Zaleski singled with two outs and an error on the play by Winkler sent her to second. A single to center by Lindenberg drove Zaleski in increasing the Thunder lead 3-1. Henderson caught Osborn looking to put the inning away. The Riptide rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Iancin led off with a base hit and Winkler singled with two outs putting the tying run on board for New England. The Riptide could not bring the runners home as Jackie Pasquerella grounded out to Gardner at second ending the game in a 3-1 Thunder victory. Having completed the regular season with a 24-17 record the Riptide head to the playoffs in Connecticut at the home of the Brakettes.
