Rockford Thunder News Release
ROCKFORD - The Thunder has traded Savannah Brown and it's 4th round draft pick to Philadelphia in exchange for All-NPF shortstop Chelsea Spencer and the Force's 5th round pick, team General Manager Aaron M. Moore announced today.
Spencer, a four-year NPF veteran, had another solid offensive season with the Force in 2008, leading the team with 26 RBI (5th in NPF), 28 runs scored and 152 at-bats. Spencer recorded 42 hits on the campaign, ranking third on the Force and maintained a .276 batting average. Spencer provided a nice balance of power and speed in the Force lineup, drilling four home runs while also swiping eight bases.
In four seasons with the Force, the 25-year-old University of California-Berkley graduate batted .303 with nine homers and 44 RBI. The Alameda, Calif. native led Philadelphia with a .333 batting average and tied for the team lead with five home runs and 18 RBI in 2007.
"I am very excited that I am now a part of the Thunder. When I was 14, I came to this town for my first nationals and have great memories of the city," stated Spencer.
"Everyone was very hospitable and the fans of softball are the best. Ever since then, I knew that Rockford would be a great place to play and now I have the chance to be a part of this community. I think that my move to this organization will strengthen the infield and add to the continuing success of the Rockford Thunder. My only goal for this season is a championship and cannot wait for Rockford to become my home."
"We are thrilled to bring in a player like Chelsea," said Moore. "She is a competitor and an extremely gifted player that automatically takes our offense to a different level. When you have the chance to get an all-star player, you have to take it and we're definitely looking forward to having her."
Brown, having just completed her first professional season, batted .206 (13-for-63) with three home runs and 12 RBI in 22 games for the Thunder. Rockford drafted the 22-year-old catcher out of Georgia Tech University with its first selection (5th overall) in the 2008 NPF senior draft. The San Diego, Calif. native holds the ACC and Georgia Tech record with 194 career RBI and ranks third at GT and fourth in the ACC with 45 career home runs.
