Minnesota Thunder News Release
The Thunder will host several familiar faces on Thursday, July 28, when it plays host to the Virginia Beach Mariners (4-10-5, 17 pts.) at James Griffin Stadium in St. Paul. Kick-off is set for 7:05 p.m. Returning to St. Paul will be former Thunder players Steve Shak (2002-03) and David Castellanos (2004).
For tickets call 651-917-TEAM or visit www.mnthunder.com.
The Mariners currently sit in 11th place in the USL First Division standings but have been getting good results with a recent coaching change and have won their last two games. The Mariners beat the Charleston Battery 1-0 on July 16 and the Rochester Raging Rhinos 2-1 on July 23, both teams that have beaten the Thunder this season on its home turf.
"This game is an important one for us," said head coach Buzz Lagos. "We are two different teams since our earlier meeting this season and both of us are fighting for a playoff spot."
The Thunder and the Mariners have battled once this season on May 20 in a game that ended in a 2-2 tie.
Thursday night's match is sponsored by the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association. There will be a parade of teams prior to the Thunder game for all teams participating in the state tournament. MYSA will give away inflatable hands to the first 1,000 fans through the gate. MYSA participants are encouraged to use their complimentary MYSA ticket for this match that they received in the mail.
Tickets for the Thunder's Open Cup match on August 3 against the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer will be for sale at the Thunder home game on Sunday.
