Thunder Sign Owen to Man the Pipes

July 11, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) - Stockton Thunder News Release

Stockton, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's New York Islanders and AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, announced the signing of goaltender Shane Owen per Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Rich Kromm .

"He's a young guy with a great attitude who had a big year last year," Kromm said. "Shane had great numbers in juniors and is hungry to prove that he can play at a higher level and that mentality is what we are looking for from our guys."

Owen, 24, just finished his first full season with the Central Hockey League's Missouri Mavericks, finishing the year going 35-15-1 and posting a 2.58 goals-against-average and a .917 save-percentage. In addition, Owen was named to the All-CHL Team and picked up CHL Goalie of the Week honors four times and Goalie of the Month honors once.

"I'm very excited to join the Thunder," Owen said. "I've heard nothing but great things about the city, the fans, Coach Kromm and the front office. I'm ready to make that jump and become an impact player at the ECHL level. I'll be working hard this summer to come to camp prepared and ready to go in October."

The Shanty Bay, Ontario native originally began his junior career with the Erie Otters of the OHL but eventually landed on the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, helping the team capture the QMJHL Championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup.

Owen has played a combined 60 games in the ECHL with the Florida Everblades, South Carolina Stingrays, Utah Grizzlies and Alaska Aces. The 6'1", 183 lb. netminder has also played a game in the AHL for the Hersey Bears along with two games in the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey (LNAH). Owen was also invited to the New Jersey Devils Training Camp in 2010.
