Portland Thunder News Release

PORTLAND - In a game of swings, the Portland Thunder dropped their first contest of the 2015 season to the Tampa Bay Storm, 54 - 48, in front of 5098 at Moda Center Friday evening.

"We gave one away there," stated Thunder (1-1) head coach Mike Hohensee. "We played well overall, but a couple of our own mistakes had us lose this one. Now we have to regroup on a short week."

Two plays, both occurring at the end of each respective half, and both in favor of the Storm (1-1), made the difference in a back and forth game that saw six lead changes.

Tampa Bay, down seven with :47 seconds left in the first half, scored via a 33 yard pass from QB Jason Boltus to WR Kendrick Ings to bring things level at 27. A successful onside kick from K Craig Peterson, recovered by DL Julius Forte five seconds later, was quickly followed up by another Boltus TD pass, to provide the away side a lead heading into the half.

With :11 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Thunder QB Kyle Rowley had a pass intercepted when Tampa Bay DB James Harrell jumped WR Jamar Howard's route along the far-side wall, sealing the game.

The first half had largely been dominated by the tandem of Rowley and Howard. Rowley hit Howard 8 times in the first two frames, for 139 yards and three scores prior to the Storm's two possession swing. Howard led all receivers in the game, tallying four scores, from 15 catches, and a new Thunder single game high of 221 receiving yards.

Storm WR Antoine 'T.T.' Toliver led all Storm receivers with nine catches, for 149 yards, and three scores. The 12 year veteran ended the game just two catches shy of 1000 on his career.

The Thunder face local rival, the Spokane Shock, at home next Thursday, April 9th.
