Thunder Holds off Mallards

WICHITA, Kan. - Travis Brown scored twice as the host Wichita Thunder (13-2-2) jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and went on to defeat t he Quad City Mallards (6-9-1) 4-2 Saturday night.

Travis Ewanyk- who also had an assist- roofed the opening goal at 12:21 of the first period. Brown doubled the Thunder lead by burying Mark MacMillan's centering pass at 16:09 of the first. The Thunder was on the power play when Brown struck again with a blast from the point with just 32 seconds left in the period.

The Mallards twice narrowed Wichita's lead to two goals in the second period. Sam Warning scored a 5-on-3 power play goal from the right wing circle to cut the gap to 3-1 at 2:38 of the second. At 11:06, Etienne Boutet responded for the Thunder with a rising drive from the right circle. Undaunted, the Mallards clawed closer again when Matt Pohlkamp raced into the left wing circle and swept the puck home with 46 seconds left in the middle frame but the Thunder would hold off the Mallards in the third to secure the win.

Earlier Saturday, the Mallards activated defenseman Kyle Bigos from injured reserve and placed forward Justin Kovacs on injured reserve retroactive to November 13.

The Mallards visit the Kansas City Mavericks tomorrow. The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night, December 20 at 6:35 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets. Fans can enjoy $1 10-ounce beers from TaxSlayer Center concession stands during all Mallards Wednesday home games this season.
