Thunder Coach A Fan Of CenTex QB, Except For Saturday

Frisco Thunder News Release

FRISCO, Tex. - Frisco Thunder head coach Troy Esprit has always been a fan of former Texas quarterback James Brown, and will continue to be until 6:59 p.m. CST Saturday.

That's when the Thunder will face Brown and his new team, the CenTex Barracudas in a key Intense Football League game in Belton Tex. What happens afterwards?

"I'll start being a James Brown fan all over again Sunday morning,'' Esprit kidded.

Saturday's game features a Frisco (5-3) team and a surging CenTex (4-3) squad that are both vying for playoff position in the nine-team IFL. It's also a match-up of two of the league's top passing games - Frisco is averaging 241 yards per game while Brown has thrown for 352 yards and 10 touchdowns since joining the Barracudas.

"James is agile, a good quarterback and a great leader," Esprit said of Brown. "CenTex made a great pickup."

Esprit and Brown go back to their high school playing days in Beaumont, Tex. - both were finalists for the Willie Ray Smith award in their senior year. Esprit went on to play for Grambling State and Brown went on to start three years for Texas, garnering the 1995 SWC offensive player of the year award.

Frisco comes into the game with two weeks of rest while CenTex - even though on a two-game roll - is playing on a short week, having played at Katy last Sunday.

"We were in that same situation in our last game before the bye week and that turnaround can be tough on the body,'' Esprit said.
