Madison Avenues: Thunder RB Brings Blocking Ability Along With Running

Frisco Thunder News Release

FRISCO, Tex. - Ricky Madison leads the Intense Football League in rushing yardage and touchdowns. So, naturally, we're going to spend the next 330 words talking about the Frisco Thunder running back's contribution in the blocking department. Running the ball has never been the highest priority at any level of indoor football, so Madison's ability to pick up the blitz, protect the quarterback's blind side or simply being the fourth blocker has been a positive for the Thunder so far this season. Frisco has given up just seven sacks in eight games and is third in the IFL in total offense.

"He's done an extraordinary job from day one,'' said Thunder coach Troy Esprit. "It's one position we don't have to worry about."

Most indoor and arena teams typically a fullback-type body in the offensive scheme, but Madison's more of a tailback. That means Madison - all 5-11 and 220 pounds of him - is sometimes charged to stop an oncoming lineman weighing at least 30 or 40 pounds more than him.

"He's lighter and smarter than the typical fullback," Esprit said. "It should be hard, but from what I've seen, Ricky's making it look easy."

Madison admits that sometimes he feels like "David going against Goliath."

`` Fear motivates me harder," Madison said. "It's just been a matter of picking up how quick this game is."

The former Texas Christian star takes some satisfaction with the stats - 68 carries for 191 yards and 10 touchdowns and the league's longest run of 33 against Corpus Christi.

"I want to be able to say I can run the ball in outdoor or indoor ball," Madison said. "Whatever needs to be done, I'll do it."

But will it be his rushing skills or blocking ability that gets him to the next level?

"I hope it's the whole nine yards," Madison said. "I want people to see I still have the heart, the speed, the strength and can commit to a game plan."

Frisco (5-3) plays at CenTex (4-3) Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST. For live audiocasts and updates, visit friscothunderifl.com
