Thunder Beef up Defense
October 16, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Portland Thunder News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Thunder picked up some defensive help on Thursday, as they were assigned defensive end Frank Trotter and defensive back Pat Miller.
"Frank was one of the top free agents we were going after. We thought he was our best overall defensive lineman in Iowa last year," said Head Coach Mike Hohensee. "He's a man of character, a tremendous football player, and a great competitor. We're fortunate to have him come in to Portland. We've been trying to get [Miller] into the Arena Football League for a couple of years. He played for West Virginia, a great cover guy, and he has a nose for the ball. The Portland Thunder just got better today."
Trotter (6-2, 285) racked up stats for the Barnstormers in every way in 2014, recording 28.5 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and broke up nine passes from his defensive end position. Prior to the AFL, he concluded his college career third on Memphis' all-time list with 36.5 tackles for a loss, including a career-high 16.5 as a junior in 2010. He earned All-Conference USA honorable mention honors twice for the Tigers.
Miller (5-11, 190) played four years at West Virginia, where he picked up 136 tackles, two interceptions, and defended 16 passes as a member of the Mountaineers. Prior to college, he was ranked as one of the top 50 recruits in Alabama in 2008-09 and earned Alabama State Sportswriters Association Class 6A all-state honors.
