Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers bounded past the Brevard County Manatees with a four-run fifth inning, completing a series sweep with a 5-2 victory at Bright House Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Threshers (13-5) have now won six-straight games, and 10 of their past 11 as they continue to boast the best record in the Florida State League.

After the Manatees (3-15) grabbed their first lead of the series with a run in the second, Clearwater answered with a run to tie in the third.

Scott Kingery ripped a double down the third-base line to lead off the inning, and with two outs Kyle Martin split the gap in left-center to bring home Kingery with a double.

Angel Ortega put the Manatees back out in front in the fifth, with a run-scoring double off Threshers starter Will Morris (1-1).

Morris earned his first win of the season, limiting Brevard County to just two runs on six hits and a walk across five innings.

Clearwater mustered another two-out rally to go ahead for good in the bottom half.

Carlos Tocci got it going by drawing a four-pitch walk, and Martin followed with a single to center. Mitch Walding stepped in and pushed a single to left to score Tocci and tie the game at two.

After reliever Jon Olczak replaced the starter Kodi Medeiros (1-3), Zach Green greeted him with a double to left-center that scored Martin and Walding with the go-ahead runs. Malquin Canelo tacked on an RBI triple for good measure, making it 5-2 Threshers.

11 of the 13 runs that Clearwater scored in the series came with two outs.

Victor Arano and Alexis Rivero teamed up for three scoreless innings out of the pen, and Miguel Nunez worked around a single in the ninth and struck out the final two batters of the game to earn his third save in as many tries.

After an off day on Monday, the Threshers head to Daytona for three games starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Thomas Eshelman will take the hill in the opener.
