FORT MYERS, Fl - The Clearwater Threshers dropped both games of a doubleheader 6-1 and 7-4 to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on Friday night at Hammond Stadium.
In the first contest, left-hander Gabriel Cotto made his 14th start of the season on the mound for Clearwater. The southpaw allowed five runs, four earned on six hits and struck out five in three innings of work.
The Mighty Mussels (7-9, 48-32) opened the scoring in the second inning, using a three-run home by Carlos Aguiar to build a 3-0 lead.
After the Threshers (5-14, 40-44) trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Jamari Baylor, the Mighty Mussels stormed back with two more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth off reliever Victor Lopez to make it a 6-1 final.
In the second contest, fellow left-hander Jordi Martinez made his 10th start of the season on the mound for Clearwater. Martinez allowed six runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out six in only 2.2 innings.
The Threshers used a leadoff single by Leandro Pineda and an RBI double by Kendall Simmons to make it 1-0 two batters into the game. Simmons finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Fort Myers responded immediately in the home half of the first however, pushing home three runs on two RBI doubles and a wild pitch.
The Mighty Mussels put together a big four-run third frame to build a 7-1 lead, before the Threshers scratched across three runs in the sixth. Three infield singles by Micah Yonamine, Nicolas Torres and Erick Brito as well as two bases loaded walks helped Clearwater trim the deficit to 7-4.
Right-hander Gunner Mayer worked an impressive two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out three but the Threshers offense couldn't inch any closer. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the visitors.
