Threshers Snap Losing Skid, Down Mighty Mussels 5-1

FORT MYERS, Fl - Fueled by dominant pitching and steady offense, the Clearwater Threshers knocked off the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 5-1 to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.

Right-hander Jean Cabrera made his 10th start of the season on the mound for Clearwater, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out four in four innings of work. Cabrera is the 30th ranked prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system.

The Threshers (6-14, 41-44) used doubles by second baseman Kendall Simmons and catcher Arturo De Freitas in the fourth inning to open the scoring and make it 1-0.

After the Mighty Mussels (7-10, 48-33) evened the contest 1-1 in the bottom half, the Threshers responded with another RBI double by Leandro Pineda in the fifth to grab a 2-1 advantage.

Left-hander Gabriel Yanez entered in the fifth for Clearwater, allowing only two hits and striking out three in two innings of work to keep the Threshers in front. Yanez was credited with his second win of the season.

The Threshers added one more in the sixth on an RBI single by Andrick Nava, before pushing two more home on an RBI groundout from Marcus Lee Sang and another RBI base knock by De Freitas to make it 5-1.

Righty Brett Schulze, on an MiLB Rehab assignment from Jersey Shore, made his second appearance for the Threshers and tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to keep the visitors in the lead.

With the Threshers leading 5-1 in the ninth, right-hander Rodolfo Sanchez entered and worked a scoreless final frame with a strikeout to preserve the victory. It was only the fifth win in 19 meetings for the Threshers against the Mighty Mussels this season.

Clearwater and Fort Myers wrap up the six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Lefty Jordan Fowler (1-0, 2.73 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set to begin at 12:50 p.m.
