Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Clearwater Threshers squared off against a Tampa Bay Rays' rehabber for the second-straight day, and suffered a 2-0 loss against Alex Cobb and the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night.
Colin Kleven turned in his third consecutive strong strong, but Clearwater was held scoreless by three Charlotte hurlers in game two of the series at Charlotte Sports Park.
Cobb (1-0) turned in five innings in his first rehab appearance with the Stone Crabs, as the righty works his way back from an oblique strain. He struck out nine Threshers' batters while scattering three hits.
Kleven (1-5) was hung with the loss despite giving the Threshers seven solid innings. The right-handed hurler from Kamloops, British Columbia, surrendered two runs - one earned - on five hits and two walks while striking out a season-high eight batters.
In his past three starts, Kleven has permitted only six runs - five earned - over 20 innings for a 2.25 ERA over that span.
The Stone Crabs (20-21) used a single, error, and walk to load the bases with nobody out in the first inning. Patrick Leonard pushed home the game's first run with a grounder to Art Charles at first, which resulted in a fielder's choice force out of Tommy Coyle at second base. Andrew Toles scored from third on the play to make it 1-0.
Justin O'Conner then flew out to right fielder Brian Pointer, and with Tyler Goeddel tagging from third, Pointer fired a strike home to nab Goeddel at the plate for the inning's final out.
Kleven allowed just two singles over the next four innings, and the score remained the same until the seventh. With two down in the frame, Leornard homered to left to make it 2-0 Charlotte.
Clearwater threatened with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, and again with runners on second and third and two down in the eighth, but were held scoreless by relievers Parker Markel and Ryan Garten.
Clearwater (9-30) will take on the Stone Crabs in the third game of the four-game set on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. The broadcast can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 1:15 p.m.
