Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fl - Despite a late ninth-inning rally, the Clearwater Threshers fell short in a 5-3 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays in the six-game series opener on Tuesday night at BayCare Ballpark.
Right-hander Oswald Medina made his eighth start on the mound for Clearwater, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out two in four innings of work.
The Blue Jays (21-25) opened the scoring with a three-run third inning, using a Rainer Nunez RBI single and a two-run home run by Damiano Palmegiani to build a 3-0 lead. Dunedin went on to add two more in the sixth on RBI base knocks by Roque Salinas and Jose Ferrer off right-hander Eiberson Castellano to make it 5-0.
Trailing 5-0 in the ninth, the Threshers (23-22) loaded the bases to begin the inning and scratched their first run on a walk by Anthony Quirion. Outfielder Leandro Pineda later added a two-run single up the middle to trim the deficit to 5-3, but the Threshers couldn't push anything else home and stranded the tying runs on base.
Clearwater and Dunedin return to action in game two of the six-game set on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Lefty Gabriel Cotto (1-1, 5.14 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set for 11:50 a.m.
