Three Things to Know: Nashville SC vs. Charleston Battery (Eastern Conference Quarterfinal)
October 25, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release
NASHVILLE - Nashville SC's historic season continues this Saturday as the team hosts its round-one match of the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs for the first time in club history. After defeating Ottawa Fury FC in a play-in match on Wednesday, ninth-seeded Charleston Battery earned a ticket to Music City for a showdown at First Tennessee Park. The match, presented by Nissan, is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT.
Here are the three things you need to know about Saturday's match:
1.) Playoff Promotions at the Park
Get ready to rally in the stands this Saturday and show up early to First Tennessee Park for an exclusive playoff match giveaway. The first 5,000 fans to walk through the gates will receive a free rally towel, courtesy of Nissan, to spin during the match as they cheer on the Boys in Gold. Fan friendly pricing continues with two great beverage deals including $2 32oz. sodas and $5 draft beer. All USL-branded merchandise has been marked down to 50% off and grab bags are all $25.
2.) Survive and Advance
After finishing the regular season in second place in the Eastern Conference, Nashville SC avoided the play-in match that took place three days before round one of this year's playoff. Charleston and Ottawa Fury FC along with North Carolina FC and Birmingham Legion went head to head on Wednesday, Oct. 23 to determine who would play over the weekend. Both of the lower seeded teams, Birmingham who finished in 10th and Charleston Battery who finished ninth, upset higher seeded North Carolina and Ottawa. The winner of Saturday's match between Nashville and Charleston will play the winner of New York Red Bulls II vs. Indy Eleven in the second round. New York and Indy will battle it out on Saturday, Oct. 26 as well, but will kickoff slightly earlier at 6:30 p.m. CT.
3.) Historically Speaking
This is far from Nashville and Charleston's first rodeo. The two teams have met five times prior including a third-round US Open Cup clash in May of this year. A 1-1 deadlock after regulation led to a penalty shootout that fell in favor of Charleston 3-0. Nashville, however, got its revenge in August when midfielder Bolu Akinyode scored a last-minute stunner from outside the box to steal a 2-1 win at home. With an overall series record of 1W-2D-2L, Nashville SC will look to even the series score with a key playoff win Saturday night.
