Hayden Partain scored a brace Wednesday night that led the Sacramento Republic FC to a 4-1 victory over the Tulsa Roughnecks FC at ONEOK Field. The Roughnecks had several near misses as their lone goal came from Nemanja Vukovic off of a penalty kick.
The loss dropped TRFC to 3-15-11 on the season, while Sacramento improved to 15-7-7, firmly in position to claim a spot in the Western Conference playoffs.
The first good chance of the match came from the Roughnecks came in the ninth minute. Vukovic earned a free kick off of a foul. After taking the kick, the ball bounced back to him with an open shot from the left side of the box. But his shot was made right into the keeper's arms.
A few minutes later, Alex Covarrubias had a nice attempt. A cross from Vukovic was defended, and headed right to Covarrubias. He kicked a bullet from 30 yards out, but again right to the keeper Josh Cohen.
Vukovic came within inches of opening the scoring in the 19th minute. A Roughnecks corner kick was perfectly served into the box that found the head of Vukovic at the back post. He headed the ball to the lower 90, but Cohen came up big, making a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
Sacramento scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute. Covarrubias anticipated a whistle from the referee and handled the ball near the corner flag, give the Republic a dangerous free kick opportunity. Eti Tavares cleared the cross, but he rolled the clearance directly to Elliot Hord, leaving him with a wide-open shot. Hord buried his shot from just outside the penalty area into the upper left corner to give Sacramento a 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the second half. Five minutes into the half, Joaquin Rivas was very close to scoring the equalizer. After a couple of nice passes, the ball found Rivas just outside the center of the box. He curled a left-footed shot that missed just wide of the far post.
Minutes later, Sacramento doubled its lead to 2-0. In the 54th minute, a series of quick passes allowed the Republic FC to promptly get down the field. A final pass from Christian Eissele found Partain who delivered a perfect shot into the upper left corner of the goal, well out of the reach of Roughnecks keeper Chase Gentry.
The Roughnecks found a way back into the match in the 62nd minute when Michael Gamble was brought down in the box by Emrah Klimenta, and the Roughnecks were awarded a penalty kick. Vukovic sent Cohen the wrong way and softly guided the ball to the bottom left corner, cutting Tulsa's deficit in half at 2-1.
Five minutes later, Sacramento got the goal right back. From the right, Jure Matjasic delivered a cross into the center of the box to Cameron Iwasa who snuck in front of the defense. His right-footed shot found the back of the net and gave the Republic a 3-1 lead.
Partain extended Sacramento's lead to 4-1 in the 80th minute. Iwasa made a quick pass to Matjasic who quickly found Partain with his heel. Partain buried the shot into the left of the net for his brace.
Late into the match, Gamble was close to cutting the score in half. The striker dribbled past three Sacramento defenders and left himself with just the keeper in front of him. But, Cohen again came up big, sticking out his right hand to deflect the shot over the goal.
Tulsa quickly returns to action Saturday evening at ONEOK Field when it hosts the Swope Park Rangers. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
