HARRISBURG, Pa -- Back to back goals from Louisville City FC (14-6-9) in the first half and a last minute penalty kick in stoppage time was enough to push the defending 2017 USL Champions past Penn FC (9-12-8) Wednesday night.
After a back and forth battle in the first 25 minutes, LCFC found its stride. From across the box, Shaun Francis found the foot of Paolo DelPiccolo. With defenders converging, DelPiccolo fired a bullet into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Louisville capitalized again. New York City FC loanee Jonathan Lewis glided down the left wing and floated a ball to midfielder Niall McCabe. He blasted it out of the air into the upper left corner, increasing the advantage to 2-0.
With only 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Lucky Mkosana and Miguel Jaime pushed forward, creating opportunities on the offensive end but came up short. Mkosana nearly snuck in a goal off of a quick restart while Jaime one-timed a rocket from just outside the box which deflected off the crossbar and out of play.
The defensive hold from the Blue and White was just enough to keep the deficit to 2-0 going into the second half.
Rush Soccer's First Team continued to threaten in the second half as the squad made offensive-minded substitutions. The team recorded 10 shots in the half, but Louisville keeper Gregory Ranjitsingh kept his net clean.
The score held at 2-0 until stoppage time, but, in the 90th minute, Louisville struck again. McCabe drew a foul in the box and forward Luke Spencer converted the subsequent penalty kick to give his team an indomitable 3-0 lead.
Penn FC returns to action Saturday, Sept. 22 to take on first place FC Cincinnati in the fifth match of The Homestretch. Kickoff at FNB Field is set for 7 p.m. Tickets to Saturday's match as well as the rest of the matches during The Homestretch are available at pennfc.com/tickets.
