New Jersey Storm News Release
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ â The New Jersey Storm professional indoor lacrosse team announced today that three representatives of its inaugural squad will be playing for their respective homelands at the 2002 World Lacrosse Championships this month in Perth, Western Australia. Storm standout Gordon Purdie and points leader Cam Bomberry have been selected to play on Team Australia and the Iroquois Nationals Team respectively. Storm reserve player and New Jersey native Dan Leidl was also selected by Team Ireland to help dethrone Team USA, the defending champions.
Purdie, a defensive and face-off specialist for the Storm and a member of Team Australia, is up for the challenge of hosting the Championships in his home country. "I am anxious as I gear up for another World Championships. They are in Australia which does put more pressure on the Australian team to do well. I think we have a strong team that is well-coached and prepared for some great competition." This will be Purdie's fifth World Championships appearance for Australia.
The Iroquois Nationals Team is a unique entity, comprising the only Native American team sanctioned to compete in any sport internationally. The Iroquois were admitted into the International Lacrosse Federation in 1990 and have been ranked as high as third in the ILF (1999). Iroquois star Cam Bomberry led the Storm with 45 points last season (17 goals, 28 assists).
The 2002 World Lacrosse Championships will be held in Perth for the second time in the event's 35-year history. The games will begin on July 6th at Challenge Stadium and will culminate with the championship game on July 14th.
The Storm finished their initial National Lacrosse League season strongly winning four of their last six games. Storm players, dancers, and staff are currently on the road with a grassroots BarnStorming Tour of the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area designed to familiarize fans with the team. The Storm is one of 13 teams in the 16-year old NLL.
