Danbury Westerners News Release
Danbury, CT- May 1, 2014: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of three pitchers for the 2014 season: Max Knutson, Joe Kuzia and Ryan Marks.
Max Knutson (Arden Hills, MN) is a freshman southpaw for the University of Nebraska. Through April 30th Knutson has made six appearances, all in relief, garnering three strikeouts against one walk. Prior to joining the Cornhuskers, Knutson was ranked as the third-best overall recruit and the number one left-handed pitcher in the state of Minnesota by Perfect Game. Knutson led his high school team to their first-ever state title in 2013, posting a 6-1 record and a 0.68 ERA.
Joe Kuzia (Seymour, CT) is the closer for St John's University, and through April 30th had yet to give up an earned run. Kuzia has made 20 appearances for the Red Storm, throwing 29.1 innings and boasting a K/BB ratio of greater than 3:1 while notching eight saves. Opponents are hitting .167 against him this season. Prior to 2014 Kuzia pitched for Herkimer County C.C, appearing in 18 games over two seasons. During that time Kuzia boasted a 7-4 record with 70 strikeouts in 69.0 innings pitched, helping his team win back-to-back Mountain Valley Conference championships.
Ryan Marks (Cos Cob, CT) is a left hander pitching for Columbia University. As a freshman this season, Marks has appeared in five games (one start) and has a 0.82 ERA with 11.0 innings of work. Marks has only allowed four hits this season, while striking out nine. Prior to joining Columbia, Marks had an exceptional career at Greenwich (CT) High School, where he helped Greenwich to the FCIAC regular season championship in his junior and senior season.
Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerns, commented, "Knutson, Kuzia and Marks have all demonstrated excellent skills in their high school and collegiate careers, especially by pounding the strike zone and minimizing base on balls. This is a recipe for success in the NECBL as well, and I look forward to watching them displaying their talents this summer."
