Atlanta Beat News Release

ATLANTA (January 2, 2003) - Atlanta Beat goalkeeper Briana Scurry, midfielder Kylie Bivens and forward Cindy Parlow, were today named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for a training camp in San Diego, California, in preparation for an international match versus Japan on January 12 and for the prestigious Four Nations Tournament in China.

The U.S. team will arrive in San Diego on Jan. 9, then will face Japan on Jan. 12 at Torero Stadium, home of the San Diego Spirit. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN at 4 p.m. ET. The U.S. will then train for three more days before departing to China on Jan. 16. The USA, Norway, Germany and Women's World Cup host China will face off in a series of three doubleheaders in three Chinese cities, spread over three provinces in the southwest region of the country.

Scurry and Parlow last played for the U.S. in November, as the duo helped lead the U.S. to a berth in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup by capturing the 2002 Gold Cup Championship with a 2-1 win over Canada. Scurry, who has appeared in 111 games for the U.S., started four of five games in the 2002 Gold Cup recording wins in all four and is seemingly on path to returning as the number one goalkeeper for the U.S. heading into a World Cup year. Parlow notched five goals in five games at the Gold Cup and surpassed Carin Gabarra to move into 5th on the all-time goals list. Parlow has scored 57 career goals in 115 appearances for the U.S.

Bivens, a central defensive midfielder for the Beat, will likely be playing for a spot on the defensive line for the U.S. Women. She has appeared in seven international matches and last competed with the U.S women in training camp before the international match on July 21, 2002, versus Norway.

Beat midfielder and Japanese National Team captain, Homare Sawa, will be on hand for Japan. Sawa ranked second on the Beat in scoring in 2002, with seven goals and six assists for 20 points. In the fall of 2002, she helped lead Japan to a 3rd place finish in the 14th Asian Games, as she started all five games in the tournament notching three goals. Japan's qualification tournament for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup takes place in the spring of 2003.

The Four Nations Tournament begins on Jan. 23 in Yiwu, as China faces Germany and the USA takes on Norway. The teams will move to Women's World Cup venue Wuhan for the Jan. 26 matches that feature Germany vs. Norway and the USA vs. China. The blockbuster tournament will finish on Jan. 29 in Shanghai, site of the 2003 Women's World Cup Final, as the USA takes on Germany and China faces Norway. All the matches will be broadcast on TV nationally within China.
