Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Brent Thompson, ECHL 2011 Coach of the Year, has stepped down as head coach of the Alaska Aces to accept a position as the head coach in the American Hockey League with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The search for a replacement has already begun.
Last season, Thompson led the Aces to their second ECHL championship in six years, winning Game 5 of the Kelly Cup Finals in Kalamazoo, MI. During his two-years as head coach his regular season record was 86-50-11(.614), including the club's second Brabham Cup, fifth West Division and fifth National Conference title in seven years this past season. Thompson's team went 12-1 in the playoffs during the 2011 Kelly Cup Finals; with the first round bye the ACES swept all but the Kalamazoo Wings. His departure ends a two-year tenure with the Aces. "We're pleased and proud that another of our head coaches has been promoted to the next level, three out of three is a great record" said Aces managing member Terry Parks. "Because we've been through this process before, our organization knew that good things happen to winning coaches at this level of pro hockey. We know that we can continue to build on the firm foundation that has been laid over the past eight years."
The Aces open the 2011-12 regular season at home against Las Vegas October 14 and 15, with both games scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start at the Sullivan Arena. For those interested in season tickets or corporate sponsorship informationcontact the Alaska Aces office at the corner of 15th and Gambell Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
