Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, NE - Pitcher Brad Thompson, designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals last Thursday, has elected to take free agency. The 28-year old right-hander could have taken an outright assignment to Omaha. He opened this season with the Triple-A Royals.

Thompson, cut when right-hander Kanekoa Texeira was claimed off waivers, was 0-4 with a 6.41 ERA n 16 relief appearances for Kansas City.

In three starts for Omaha in April, Thompson went 0-1 and posted a 5.40 ERA. He was called up to the big leagues on April 23, along with lefty Bruce Chen. The 32-year old Chen has been a find for the parent club so far this season, going 2-0 with one save and a 2.95 ERA in 12 games, including two recent starts for the injured Gil Meche.

Thompson was signed as a minor league free agent by Kansas City last November. He had split each of the past five seasons between the St. Louis Cardinals and their Triple-A club at Memphis, spending the majority of each campaign in the big leagues. Including his work for Kansas City this season, Thompson is 21-21 with a 4.46 ERA in 201 games, including 32 starts, in his Major League career.

After a league-wide off day on Wednesday, the Omaha Royals continue their homestand Thursday, opening a four-game series vs. the division-rival Nashville Sounds with a 7:05 p.m. game at Rosenblatt Stadium.

It's Thirsty Thursday, when fans enjoy $1 beers and Cokes, courtesy of 96.1 The Brew, Action 3 News and The City Weekly! It's also Big Lebowski Night, as the Royals pay homage to the classic movie. Fans who come to the ballpark wearing a bathrobe ala "The Dude" will receive a FREE General Admission ticket! Plus, the Royals will have a special offer on White Russians at the bar in Rosenblatt's front plaza.
