In 1993-94, Waterloo's Jason Blake enjoyed one of the most magical seasons in USHL history. Blake ran away with the USHL scoring title, putting up 100 points (50 goals, 50 assists) in 47 games, besting the next-highest scorer by 15 points. What makes the total noteworthy is that he is the last USHL player to hit the 100-point mark while the league still played a 48-game regular season.
Blake's offensive prowess helped the Black Hawks reach their highest win and point totals as a junior team (both totals have since been eclipsed) and he was rewarded in a big-time way. That season, Blake was named USHL Player of the Year, USHL Forward of the Year and was a First-Team All-USHL selection. He was also chosen as USA Hockey's first-ever Junior Player of the Year.
USHL INSIDER
Point Night: Lincoln defeated Waterloo 8-3 on Tuesday and nine different players had multi-point games. Brett Chartier led the way with four assists, while Garrett Peterson and Ross Henry had three points each.
Herd Charging: Sioux Falls picked up wins in all three games this week, two of them coming via the shootout, and have now won five games in a row.
Capitol Return: Former Des Moines standout Marty Mjelleli has returned to the Buccaneers as an assistant coach and scout. Mjelleli played parts of two seasons in Des Moines, including an all-star campaign in 2003-04. Mjelleli played four seasons at St. Cloud State University and briefly in the ECHL after college.
Clutch Scorer: Radoslav Illo has scored goals in four straight games and has netted the game-winner in Tri-City's last two victories.
Andy Is Dandy: Andy Taranto scored all three goals that Fargo scored this weekend. On Saturday, he scored twice, including the game-winner with 49 seconds to play in regulation of the Force's 2-1 win over Indiana.
Balch Is Burying âEm: After going scoreless in his first two games after a trade from Des Moines, Josh Balch is on a five-game streak with eight points in those five games.
New "Mark": Donnie Hallmark scored a pair of goals in the Sioux City's 5-4 shootout loss to Sioux Falls on Wednesday. The points gave Hallmark 27 points on the year, setting a new career high. His previous high was 25 points set last season.
On A Vroll: Robbie Vrolyk scored twice in Sioux Falls' 6-5 shootout win over Green Bay on Saturday night. Vrolyk, who has seven goals in his last four games, has hit the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his USHL career.
Steel Solid: Don't look now but the Chicago Steel are charging hard to the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division. They have won seven straight and now trail Waterloo by just three points.
