Central Valley Coyotes News Release

FRESNO – Newly acquired Coyote wide receiver/defensive back, George Williams, has signed an undisclosed contract with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.

"Although we will lose a very talented player that we hoped would help us win a championship, I promised him that we could be his vehicle to the next level," said head coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. "The SaberCats called with an need and we had what they were looking for. Hopefully it works out for George, it's an opportunity he has been waiting for."

Williams (6-1, 190), who was regarded as one of the best free agents available this offseason, signed with the Coyotes last month after playing for the af2's Manchester Wolves and Cape Fear Wildcats last season, totaling 91 receptions for 1184 yards and 25 touchdowns.

"A lot of questions have been asked about why I would expose a player that never took a snap with us, but that's what we do. We try to get our guys to the next step up." Biletnikoff Jr. said.

The two-way threat is not unfamiliar to the AFL as he has had brief stints with the Las Vegas Gladiators (2002) and Orlando Predators (2004).

While at Butte Junior College (Chico, Calif.), Williams was a first-team Golden Valley selection before transferring to Kansas State in 1998. He played two seasons with the Wildcats as a back up wide receiver, compiling 202 yards and scoring a couple of touchdowns.

With the signing, Williams becomes the sixth player in franchise history and third Coyote to sign an AFL contract, joining former defensive specialist Jermaine Smith who signed with the Los Angeles Avengers and Kendall Edwards who signed with the Arizona Rattlers earlier this offseason.

The Coyote's will kick off their 2005 af2 season on the road in Bakersfield on April 2. Their first home game will be on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. against the Arkansas Twisters. Fifty dollar deposits for 2005 Coyote season tickets, which include eight games played at Selland Arena, are now being accepted at 559-263-9780.
