The Whale's Kendra Broad Takes Best Shot at Raising Awareness for Mental Health Connecticut

Ontario-raised forward Kendra Broad may be in her first season with the Whale, but she wanted to immediately utilize her platform as an NWHL player to bring attention to an important cause. Broad has announced that she will contribute $2 for every shot she takes this season to Mental Health Connecticut (MHC) - a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve mental health for all Connecticut residents - and is asking friends, fans and other supporters to add to the support. Broad, who was raised in Ontario, explained her WHY:

"I believe it's always a good thing to give back to the community that you're living in, so when I moved to Connecticut to join the Whale, I wanted to find an organization that I could contribute to by volunteering and raising money and awareness. Through some research, I learned about Mental Health Connecticut. After speaking with a few representatives from the organization and learning more about them, I decided to initiate a fundraising campaign tied to hockey. I decided I would give $2 to the organization for every shot I take... this way my teammates can't get mad at me for shooting instead of passing, right?

"Mental illness is something that affects so many people. Almost everyone knows someone who has struggled, or has personally been through some things on their own. This is definitely the case for me, and is why I'm so passionate about supporting mental health initiatives, like those being led by the great people at MHC. I hope others will consider joining me in supporting the work this organization is doing to increase mental health awareness and to promote the recovery of people with mental health conditions."

For more than a century, MHC has worked to improve mental health services, promote recovery for people with mental health conditions, educate the community about the importance of mental wellness, and combat discrimination resulting from a mental health diagnosis. Through advocacy, education, and service, MHC empowers people to promote mental wellness, instigate meaningful systems change, and engage in mental health recovery.

Broad played collegiately at Lindenwood and Western Ontario and played pro the last three seasons in Europe before joining the NWHL this season. Besides playing pro hockey, Broad teaches English online to Chinese children through VIPKID.
