The Vets Get It Done! Jackhammers Win 5-3 on Friday Night!

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-Brian Forystek (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed one run and Juan Diaz (1-4) hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to power the Joliet JackHammers to a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes before 6,431 fans at CanWest Park on Friday night.

In a game that saw just four base runners in the first three innings, the JackHammers broke through with two runs in the fourth inning. Cory Harris (2-4) hit a two-out single and scored on a double by Freddy Thon (1-4). Dorian Rojas (1-4) followed with an RBI single off of Goldeyes starter Andrew Walker for a 2-0 JackHammers lead.

The JackHammers increased their lead to 5-0 thanks to the third home run of the season by Diaz. Nick Prosise (1-4) led off the fifth with a single and went to third base on a double by Doc Brooks (2-3). After Nick McIntyre (0-4) grounded out, Joey Gomes (0-4) reached first base on a fielder's choice. Goldeyes third baseman Brent Metheny threw home to retire Prosise. Diaz stepped up to the plate and lined a chest-high fastball over the right field wall.

The Goldeyes scored a run against Forystek in the fifth inning. Trino Aguilar (0-3) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a double by Antoin Gray (2-4).

Forystek tied his longest outing of the season. He also pitched six innings against the Goldeyes at Silver Cross Field on May 26. He suffered the loss in a 9-4 Goldeyes win.

The Goldeyes scored two runs in the seventh inning against reliever Daniel Touchet. Tydus Meadows (0-3) led off the inning with a walk and went to third base on a single by Metheny. Max Poulin (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Meadows and make it 5-2 in favor of the JackHammers. With the single by Poulin, Gray went to third base.

Brady Everett (1-3) hit an RBI single to score Gray and get the Goldeyes within two runs at 5-3.

Tyler Meigs came into the game in the eighth inning and pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Loose Gravel: Meigs's save was also the first multi-inning save of the 2008 season. Drew Shetrone recorded the first three saves of the season by pitching three single innings in each outing.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes play game two of their series on Saturday night. The pitching match-up is as follows: RHP Aaron Tolia (2-0, 2.29) starts for the JackHammers against (LHP) Zach Baldwin (1-0, 3.55) for the Goldeyes.
