The QMJHL bursary program â over six million dollars committed to former players
Published on November 28, 2006 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release
BOUCHERVILLE, Tuesday, November 28, 2006 - Since the birth of the Sports-Studies program in 1986, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has committed over six million dollars in academic bursaries to approximately 650 of its former players. This year, the total investment is $317,750, which will be distributed among 98 individuals, who are pursuing postsecondary, collegiate and/or university degrees on a full-time basis.
The bursaries are handed-out at the end of each semester and originate from the League's education fund. The amounts have grown every year since the start of the QMJHL academic program.
"We are very pleased to be able to play a part in our former players' academic futures. These financial contributions will certainly have a positive impact by helping them reach their career goals," mentioned the Commissioner. "Our commitments tend to grow with every passing year, as players benefit from constant supervision and added resources, such as team and League academic consultants, who monitor and evaluate their undertakings and progress. Therefore, players can acquire the necessary academic tools and eventually reap the benefits of our bursary program at the end of their major junior career."
