The Peoria Pirates Kick Off This Season Faithfully!
PEORIA, IL - The Pirates faithful are expected to be in full force at Carver Arena this Saturday, April 19th as the team makes its 2008 home debut. Peoria area high school students, however, are the ones that will actually "huddle" in faith. Before the scheduled 6.30pm kickoff, "Faith and Football", the newest aspect of the Pirates "Treasure Life" community program, will hold its first event at 5.30pm. Targeted towards high school age students, the youth group session will generally feature a guest speaker, Pirates players and a faith based environment filled with fun and fellowship. Developed and coordinated by Missy Johnson, daughter of long time Pirates assistant coach Tony Johnson, the "Faith and Football" program will provide complimentary game tickets to all youth who attend. "I have been talking to area youth groups, and I'm optimistic we'll have strong support for this program", said Missy. She's already lined up a full range of guest speakers, and has interest from over a dozen area churches and youth groups. "I'm proud of her getting involved with our community efforts and in helping provide area high school youth a safe, fun and faith based opportunity to attend the Pirates games, says Coach Johnson, and proud dad. "I appreciate the Pirates' front office support in providing the game tickets, We couldn't do this without them."
Meetings will run about 45 minutes. High school students wishing to attend should enter the Bradley Braves team door located near the old ticket office at Carver Arena. "Treasure Life" is designed to reinforce positive character values and encourages Peoria area youth to be "Pirates" by filling their "Treasure" chest each day with life's most valuable traits, actions and experiences. It has been recognized as one of the af2's best community programs.
