Philadelphia Soul
OSC contributor Fran Stuchbury interviewed Philadelphia Soul head coach Bret Munsey at "Soul Summer Slam" beach party at Wildwood, New Jersey. Munsey guided the Soul to a 9-7 record during the 2006 season and led the team to its first franchise playoff victory with a 52-35 win over the Austin Wranglers.
FS: The Soul made the playoffs last season for the first time in franchise history. Are you happy with the progress the Soul made from the previous season?
BM: Yes, we are happy with winning 10 games and making the playoffs. We fell short of our goal. We hope we can now build something from that. I think we got a great nucleus of guys coming back that have a bitter taste in their mouth. I think it's going be a great season coming up this year.
FS: How do you like the addition of Connell Maynor as the team's new offensive coordinator?
BM: I think Connell brings a lot to this football team. He's a likeable guy, knows the game as a quarterback and a play caller. He's called it on a collegiate level. I think he will fit in nicely and be a nice addition to the staff.
FS: Is the Soul going be aggressive pursuing players when free agency starts?
BM: Yes, we got a lot of holes to fill. I think it should be a great free agent market. We're like every team out there. We have to spend our money wisely.
FS: Do you spend time following af2 closely, trying to find some of the stars in that league?
BM: Sure, those guys are the guys that will play for a little cheaper dollar then the ones that have experience in our league. We have to find a few of those to make our roster and usually we do and they contribute.
FS: Does the Soul take advantage of being so close to the Philadelphia Eagles training camp? With them being so close, you could possibly sign some of those players who don't make their team, like kicker Todd France.
BM: Sure, towards the beginning of September when NFL teams cut down their roster we see all the guys that are released. We take a look at those players and hopefully get three or four of those guys to come play for us.
FS: Is it tough to teach a player to play both offense and defense or is that an easy task?
BM: That's something that is tough to do. That's why the guys who have played this game have value and they're tough to replace. An NFL guy coming over for the first year will struggle a lot of times. It's a learning process and hopefully those guys don't get you beat in the early weeks of the season.
FS: With QB Tony Graziani playing in his third season for the Soul, do you expect his performance to get even better?
BM: We hope that getting that first playoff win under his belt, that he comes in and gets ready to take it to the next level. He's one of the best, and I look forward to him having a great year.
