June 14, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
A back-and-forth battle for the top of the Coastal Division plus a Winnipesaukee offensive explosion highlights Monday's slate!
Winnipesaukee Muskrats 16 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 5
W - Kyle Roche 2-0 (Franklin Pierce): 5 IP, 4 H, 0 ER (1 R), 0 BB, 9 K
L - Nick Moran 0-1 (Liberty): 2.2 IP, 5 H, 8 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, N.H. - The Winnipesaukee Muskrats (3-3) exploded past the Upper Valley Nighthawks (2-3) to secure a double digit victory, 16-5.
With the score remaining steady through the first inning, shortstop Luca Trigiani (St Joseph's) ran home for a score following an error to get him into scoring position and a single RBI by designated hitter Clay Stearns (Troy). The Muskrats responded with an offensive strike of ten runs in two innings as infielder Brady Day (Kansas State), left fielder Jack Thorbahn (Northeastern), right fielder Grayson Preslar (North Carolina Asheville), and center fielder Tyler Grodell (Mt St Mary's) accounted for two each while designated hitter Matthew Alifano (Adelphi) and first baseman Brett Paulson (Stony Brook) recorded a run apiece for a substantial 10-1 lead.
After Patrick Williams held Winnipesaukee to just one hit in the bottom of the fourth, the Muskrats did even more damage in the next innings as they produced an additional two scores with runs by Alifano and catcher Cole Palmeri (Colby) to cushion their lead to 12-1. Upper Valley cut into the ballooning lead with two more scores by Trigiani and two additional runs by infielder Ryan Ignoffo (Eastern Illinois) and infielder Max Grant (Canisius), but was of no use as Winnipesaukee performed equivalently with four runs of their own from Day's third of the night, shortstop Kohl Abrams (North Carolina Asheville), second baseman Roddy Hernandez (Massachusetts Lowell), and first baseman Sebastian Mueller (Quinnipiac) to conclude the game, 16-5.
The Muskrats will look to get on the winning side of .500 when they host the Valley Blue Sox (2-4) tomorrow at 6 p.m. while the Nighthawks will search for a win against the Sanford Mainers at 6pm.
Newport Gulls 7 - Martha's Vineyard Sharks 4
W - Garret Simpson 1-0 (Wright State): 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
L - JD Mccracken 0-1 (Tennessee): 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Cardines Field in Newport, R.I. - The Newport Gulls (4-1) battled for a 7-4 victory over the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (3-2).
The top two teams in the Coastal Division put together a very competitive game when they met up for the first time this year. Both offenses got started early, as Vineyard's John Giesler (Georgia Tech) hit a 2-run double in the first inning. Newport responded with a Colton Ledbetter (Samford) 2-run home run to tie it up in the bottom of the inning.
Two innings later, Ledbetter led off with a walk and then was driven in on a Trent Farquhar home run to give the Gulls a 4-2 lead. However, the Sharks stayed resilient. After Thomas Bramley led the sixth inning off with a double, Marcus Franco (Nova Southeastern) drove him in on a single to cut Newport's lead in half. In the next inning, Matt Woods (Bryant) hit an RBI single to tie the game up with one out in the inning.
Vineyard was very close to taking the lead in the top of the seventh, as it had men on first and third with one out. But, Garret Simpson came in to pitch for Newport and got out of the inning without allowing another run. This set up for the Gulls to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut) hit an RBI single to make it a 5-4 game. He was then driven in on by Slate Alford (Mississippi State) , who hit a double on a ball that the center fielder lost in the lights.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Gulls added some insurance on a Joshua Kuroda-Grauer (Rutgers New Brunswick) RBI single. Simpson remained in the game until its end, as he racked up 2.2 perfect innings.
Newport and Vineyard will face each other again today at 6:35 p.m., with this matchup being at the home of the Sharks.
