The NECBL Daily Rundown - 7/27/22 - Waves and Gulls Take Key Wins in Coastal Division to Highlight Wednesday's Lineup

Ocean State Waves 10 - Martha's Vineyard Sharks 4

W - Jacob Kush 3-0 (Missouri Columbia): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K

L - Jack Beauchesne 3-1 (Northeastern): 3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Old Mountain Field in South Kingston, R.I.- The Ocean State Waves (21-20) put up double digits against Coastal Division rival, Martha's Vineyard Sharks (26-15) in a 10-4 win.

The Sharks bursted with two runs in the opening frame when third baseman Michael Snyder (Washington) hit a single to right field to bring in center fielder Logan Chambers (Tennessee) and first baseman Danny Crossen (Northeastern) got home off of a wild pitch for an early 2-0 lead.

The Waves produced a three-run effort in the second inning with center fielder Khyree Miller (Winthrop) smashing a homer on the first play along with doubles by catcher Chase Meggers (Oregon) and second baseman Alex Ramirez (Rhode Island) to pass the Sharks, 3-2. The Waves continued to push their lead in the fourth with a home run by Ramirez that brought himself and Meggers home to bump the lead to 6-2.

After the Sharks cut the deficit when Chambers walked home in the top of the fifth, Ocean State snagged another two runs from a bomb by first baseman Brodey Heaton (Belmont) in the bottom fifth and Drew Holderbach hit a single that got right fielder Jake Studley (Connecticut) and shortstop Creek Robertson (Southern Mississippi) to push the lead out to 10-3. The Sharks tried to get closer to the Waves with another walk home for second baseman Thomas Bramley (Penn State), but Waves pitcher Jack Erbeck (Fairfield) shut them down to maintain the win, 10-4.

The Waves look to keep their win streak alive with a road matchup against another division rival, the North Shore Navigators (12-29) today at 6:35pm while the Sharks try fight for the lead in the division with a showdown against the Mystic Schooners (22-18) at 12pm.

Newport Gulls 9 - North Shore Navigators 4

W - Kevin Seitter 3-1 (Quinnipiac): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

L - Cooper Smith 2-3 (Stetson): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K

Cardines Field, Newport, R.I. - The Newport Gulls (28-14) took advantage of a six-run seventh inning to defeat the North Shore Navigators (12-29) Wednesday night at Cardines Field.

Jacob Burley (Brown) kicked off the big seventh inning with a three-run home run, his fourth homer of the year. Not to be outdone, Slate Alford (Mississippi St.) hit another three-run shot, his seventh home run of the year, just four batters later to give the Gulls a sizable seven-run lead.

Alford finished the game with five RBIs, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning to kick off scoring for Newport. Trent Farquhar (Michigan St.) also joined the home run club, hitting a solo shot in the third inning, his fifth home run of the year.

The Navigators put up two runs in the fourth, scoring on a passed ball and an error by the first baseman. An RBI single in the eighth by Justin Cassella (Elon) gave North Shore hope and an RBI groundout by Charlie Taylor (Tennessee) in the ninth cut the deficit to five runs but a groundout to shortstop ended the game and the chance of a comeback for the Navigators.

Both teams return to play on Thursday, July 28th, with the Gulls playing a road game against the Mystic Schooners beginning at 6:30 p.m. while the Navigators host the Ocean State Waves at 6:35 p.m.

Sanford Mainers 4 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 1

W - Jack Mullen 2-1 (Bowdoin): 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

L - Griffin Young 1-4 (Northeastern): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Goodall Park in Sanford, M.E. - The Sanford Mainers (20-20) downed the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (18-22) after fantastic pitching performances.

Four Sanford pitchers combined to give up just one run and six hits while striking out ten. Starter Jack Mullen (Bowdoin) went five strong innings, giving up three hits and striking out four. Bryce Afthim (Southern Maine) relieved Mullen and threw two scoreless frames, letting up one hit. Brian Craven (William & Mary) struck out two in the eighth before Winnipesaukee got its only run off Brady Afthim (Connecticut).

It was an all-around pitcher's duel until the bottom of the sixth inning. Sanford scored three runs off a Jake Rainess (Maine) double and a Devin Bade (Binghamton) single. The Mainers added their fourth in the eighth before the Muskrats put their only run on the board through a Zach DeMattio (Wheaton) two-out single in the ninth.

Sanford's Jake Rainess led all batters with three hits and two RBIs. Mainers first baseman Aidan Kane (Delaware) had two hits and scored twice.

Sanford looks to climb over .500 when it hosts Keene (15-24) today at 4:00 p.m. Winnipesaukee heads home to face the Nighthawks (18-23) at 3:30 p.m.

North Adams SteepleCats 3 - Danbury Westerners 0

W - Nate Beal 2-3 (Pennsylvania): 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 0 K

L - Cody Carwile 2-2 (Georgia Tech): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

S - Gerry Peacock (Notre Dame): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams, Mass. - The North Adams SteepleCats (10-30) blanked the Danbury Westerners (18-21) to take a 3-0 win.

The Steeplecats got on the board with two runs in the bottom third when third baseman Ryan Galanie (Wofford) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home center fielder Hunter Pasqualini (Central Connecticut State) and designated hitter Tommy DiTullio (Bryant) and DiTullio got to work at bat in the seventh when he hit a single to get catcher Carson Dunkel (Albany) home which brought the score to 3-0.

The Danbury pitching squad did strike out the most batters with Carwile and Jude Zern (St Johns) combining for 9 strikeouts. The Waves pitching committee had an impressive outing as they only allowed three hits.

The Steeplecats and Westerners faceoff again twice today in a double header with start times of 4:30pm and 7pm at Rogers Park.

Vermont Mountaineers 3 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 2

W - Brendan McFall 7-1 (Tufts): 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

L - Seth Logue 0-1 (Kentucky): 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

S - Mitchell Pascarella 2-0 (UCONN): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Montpelier Recreation Field, Montpelier V.T. - The Vermont Mountaineers (31-11) held on to an early lead, defeating the Upper Valley Nighthawks (18-23) Wednesday night at Montpelier Recreation Field.

The Mountaineers struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Mark Trotta (William & Mary) doubled and was then driven in on a two-run home run by Santino Rosso (Hofstra), his second home run of the year. Another home run by Shane Lussier (Wofford), his first of the year, in the fourth inning gave Vermont its third run of the game.

The Nighthawks scored their first run in the fourth inning when a ground ball to first by William Sullivan (Troy) allowed Jonathan Hogart (Louisiana Tech), who had singled to lead off the inning, to score from third. The same duo would get the job done again in the sixth when Hogart hit a double to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Sullivan.

The Nighthawks return to play on Thursday, July 28th, with a doubleheader against the Winnipesaukee Muskrats beginning at 3:30 p.m. while the Mountaineers take a day off before returning on Friday the 29th in a road matchup against the Keene SwampBats.

Bristol Blues 5 - Valley Blue Sox 2

W - Colin McVeigh 4-1 (Fairfield): 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

L - Matthew Lauria 1-1 (Western New England): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K

S - Luke Garofalo 6 (Central Connecticut State): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

McKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.- The Bristol Blues (29-12) shut the door on the Valley Blue Sox (16-25) with a 5-2 win.

The Blues got on the board and snagged four runs in the second and third innings with two singles by third baseman Jack Lynch (Manhattan) that brought home right fielder Joseph Rios (Central Connecticut State) twice, a single by catcher Jacob Gaudreau (Bryant) to get first baseman Ben Huber (Connecticut) safely home, and an error leading to Huber's second run for a 4-0 lead.

After some back-and-forth between the teams, the Blue Sox punched in a two-run inning for themselves in the bottom of the sixth when right fielder Chase Hanson (Hope International) hit a single that allowed both third baseman Charlie Ludwick (Eastern Kentucky) and designated hitter Antonio Guerrero (Washington) two get home to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Blues held on as they smothered Valley's offense the rest of the game and tacked on one last run in the ninth when shortstop Jay Harry (Penn State) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in designated hitter Chaz Myers (Pacific) to end the game 5-2.

The Blues and Blue Sox get a rematch today at the Blues' home stadium, Muzzey Field, at 6:30pm.
