
The NECBL Daily Rundown - 7/16/22 - No-No in North Adams, Newport Rolls in the Valley

Joe Wolfe Field, North Adams, Mass. - The Bristol Blues (25-9) and North Adams SteepleCats (8-25) each earned a win as they split a doubleheader at Joe Wolfe Field on Saturday night.
Game 1: Blues 4 - SteepleCats 3
W - Jack Kelley 1-0 (Central Conn.) - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
L - Gerry Peacock 0-1 (Notre Dame) - 2.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
S - Thomas Benincaso 1-0 (Eastern Conn.) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
With the score tie 1-1 after seven innings of play, the Blues jumped ahead in the eighth, scoring three runs in the inning when Derek Tenney (Hartford) hit a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded to put his team ahead 4-1.
The SteepleCats fought back in the bottom of the ninth, scoring off a sacrifice fly by Brady Mutz (Monmouth) to cut the score to 4-2. On the ensuing at-bat, Vincent Bianchina (Northwestern) hit an RBI single to cut the lead to just one run. Unfortunately for North Adams, they were unable to complete the comeback as Benincaso earned the save.
Bianchina led the SteepleCats, going 3-for-4 on the night with an additional RBI coming in the bottom of the fourth off a single. Tenney went 3-for-4 for the Blues, scoring one run off a Joseph Rios (Central Conn.) single in the seventh inning.
Game 2: SteepleCats 4 - Blues 0
W - Cohen Nies 1-1 (Defiance College): 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
L - Matt Smith 2-1 (Southern Conn.): 0.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Nies went the distance in game two, throwing a complete game no-hitter to pick up his first win of the season.
The SteepleCats waited until the bottom of the sixth inning before jumping on the Blues, putting up four runs in the inning. Back-to-back walks by Bianchina and Dixon Black (Monmouth) put runners at first and second to start off the inning. An RBI single by Mutz got the ball rolling, giving the SteepleCats a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Alex Lane (Bryant) hit a three-run bomb, his third home run of the year, to give North Adams a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Both teams return to play on Sunday, July 17th, with the SteepleCats hosting the Danbury Westerners at 5:00 p.m. while the Blue Sox host the Mystic Schooners at 5:05 p.m.
Martha's Vineyard Sharks 2 - Keene SwampBats 1

S - Alejandro Torres 1-0 (Miami): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Alumni Field, Keene, NH - The Martha's Vineyard Sharks (19-13) edged out the Keene SwampBats (13-20) in a close contest that came down to the wire Saturday night at Alumni Field.
The Sharks struck first in the top of the fifth inning starting with an RBI single to right field by Dorian Gonzalez (Miami) to give Martha's Vineyard a 1-0 lead. Derek Berg (USMA) hit a solo shot, his second home run of the year, to give the Sharks a 2-0 advantage.
Jackson Ross (Florida Atlantic) gave the SwampBats a chance in the bottom of the ninth when he hit his eighth home run of the year to cut Martha's Vineyard lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for Keene, the Sharks' closer, Torres, was able to shut down the offense and earn the save.
The Sharks return for a doubleheader against the North Shore Navigators on Sunday, July 17th, while the SwampBats enjoy a day off before taking on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats on Monday, July 18th, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Vermont Mountaineers 9 - Winnipesaukee Muskrats 5

Robbie Mills Sports Complex in Laconia N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers (26-6) snapped its two game losing streak with a win over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats (13-18).
Things didn't look good for the Mountaineers at first after the Muskrats scored three runs in the first inning. The runs came on a leadoff home run from Brendan Concannon (Paris JC) and a two run single from Grayson Preslar (North Carolina Asheville).
After the shaky first, Vermont starter Anthony DeFabbia (Stetson) settled in and kept the Winnipesaukee offense at bay through his five innings of work. Vermont's response came in the form of an RBI singles from Tom Josten (Central Florida) in the fourth and fifth, as well as a run scored on a passed ball in the fifth to tie the game at three. The Mountaineers took the lead in the sixth on an Adam Retzbach homer, and the Muskrats tied it again at four on a sac fly from Preslar.
With the game retied, the Mountaineers took a commanding lead in the seventh. After the first two batters of the inning reached base safely, Santino Rosso scored the go ahead run on an error by Winnipesaukee's defense. They continued to score on an RBI single from Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) and RBI put outs from Retzbach and Jack Cone (William and Mary). It was 8-4 Vermont, and Winnipesaukee scored a run of its own on an error by the defense. In the eighth, Vermont scored one last run on an RBI double from Josten to go up 9-5, a score they would win by as the Mountaineers scored in each inning from the fourth through the eighth.
The Mountaineers will return home to take on the Sanford Mainers for a doubleheader Sunday at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. The Muskrats will take an off day Sunday before taking on the Keene Swamp Bats for a doubleheader at home on Monday at 3:30 and 6:00 p.m.
Mystic Schooners 5 - Upper Valley Nighthawks 4

Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, Conn.- The Mystic Schooners (19-14) claimed victory in a close game against the Upper Valley Nighthawks (15-19) by walking off, 5-4.
Mystic got on the board first in the opening frame when second baseman Mason LaPlante (Georgia) snuck home off of a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead, but the Nighthawks quickly responded with two runs in the top of the second to put themselves up 2-1 after two singles by right fielder Chris Lotito (Seton Hall) and left fielder Adarius Myers (Louisiana Tech) that brought home third baseman Nicholas Wang (Boston) and shortstop Thomas Latham (Cisco JC).
The Schooners punched in three runs in the fourth in one play to make it 4-2. Left fielder Kevin Ferrer (Connecticut) smacked a double down field which knocked in center fielder Tristan McAlister (Mt St Mary's), third baseman Charlie Paglairini (Fairfield), and catcher Jackson DeJohn (St Bonaventure).
Upper Valley attempted to rally in the eighth inning with two runs hit by Lotito and Myers but were cut short and shut down in the ninth just for Mystic to snag the tie breaking run for a walk-off win 5-4. The game winning hit was by first baseman Eddie Micheletti (George Washington).
The Schooners travel to face the Valley Blue Sox (15-19) tomorrow at 5:05pm and the Nighthawks try to dig out of the hole with another road matchup against the Ocean State Waves (17-17) at 4:30pm.
Ocean State Waves 4 - Sanford Mainers 3
W - Brooks Ey 2-1 (Virginia Commonwealth): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
L - Brian Craven 1-3 (William & Mary): 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB 2 K
Old Mountain Field in South Kingston, R.I.- The Ocean State Waves (17-17) edged out the Sanford Mainers (16-17) in a 4-3 battle.
The Waves struck first in the bottom second when center fielder Khyree Miller (Winthrop) stole home for the 1-0 lead. Ocean State bumped up their lead to 3-0 with a single by catcher Blaine Lidsky (Stonehill) and he stole home as well for the two runs in the fourth.
The Mainers cut the deficit to just one run after a two-run performance in the sixth when catcher Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown) hit a single to center field that brought home both left fielder Kevin Skagerlind (Massachusetts Amherst) and center fielder Jayson Kramer (St Johns) to make the score 3-2.
The Mainers tied it up in the eighth after another hit by Dapkewicz but were stopped cold in the ninth for the Waves to walk-off with the 4-3 win following a passed ball for infielder Creek Robertson (Southern Mississippi).
The Waves will try to break .500 when they face the Upper Valley Nighthawks (15-19) at home tomorrow at 4:30pm while the Mainers regroup for another road game with the dominant Vermont Mountaineers (26-6) at 4pm.
Newport Gulls 19 - Valley Blue Sox 0
W - Ryan Ginther 2-1 (Vanderbilt): 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
L - Jason Bickford 0-1 (Fitchburg St): 2.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER (7 R), 5 BB, 2 K
McKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass. - The Newport Gulls (22-11) crushed the Valley Blue Sox (15-19) after scoring a season-high nineteen runs.
Newport's nine-run third inning broke the game open and gave it a 12-0 lead. A Colton Ledbetter (Samford/Mississippi St) three-run homer and RBIs from Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut St), Bryan Broecker (Michigan St), Luke Beckstein (Northeastern) and Alec Makarewicz (East Carolina) plated the nine Gulls runners. Thirteen Newport batters batted in the inning, with ten reaching base.
The Gulls opened the scoring in the first with three runs thanks to a Noah Martinez double. Newport added nine more in the third before tacking on one in the fifth and sixth. The away team extended their lead to sixteen in the eighth following a Kolton Freeman (Dartmouth) double and Benzan Rounds (Harvard) single. Newport scored three final runs in the ninth, highlighted by a Jacob Burley (Brown) two-run shot, to end the game up nineteen.
Newport's pitching also dominated. Collin Lowe (Bryant), Tyler Cortland (Dartmouth), Ryan Ginther (Vanderbilt) and Seamus Barrett (Louisville) combined to give up just five hits and strike out seventeen Blue Sox. Only one walk was issued by the Gulls on the night.
Six different Newport batters had multi-hit games. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer (Rutgers) had three hits and three runs scored while Kolton Freeman led both teams with four hits while tacking on three runs and three RBIs. Noah Martinez led all players with five RBIs.
Newport has an off day today before going for its fifth straight win when it hosts North Shore (8-23) tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Valley aims to get back on track when it hosts Mystic (19-14) today at 5:05 p.m.
