The NECBL Daily Rundown - 7/12/22 - Westerners Set Franchise Record with 21-Run Outburst

July 13, 2022 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

Danbury Westerners 21 - Valley Blue Sox 2 (8 innings)

W - Logan Tabeling 1-0 (Illinois): 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER (1 R), 2 BB, 4 K

L - Jacob Terwilliger 2-1 (Bucknell): 3.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Rogers Park in Danbury, CT - The Danbury Westerners (13-18) had a historic night against the Valley Blue Sox (15-16), scoring twenty-one runs to break its franchise scoring record.

Danbury scored a run in each of the first two innings, but their ten-run fourth inning helped them storm ahead. Two Danniel Rivera (Southern New Hampshire) home runs in the same inning and a Harrison Feinberg (Southern California) solo blast accounted for half of the Westerners' fourth-inning runs. Other RBIs by Hank Thomas (Ohio St), Jermaine White (St Johns), Sam Mongelli (Sacred Heart) and Joseph Skarad (Sacred Heart) brought the innings total to ten. Skarad, Mongelli and Rivera all ended the night with four RBIs. Skarad was the only player to get a hit in every at bat, going 4-4.

Danbury added seven more runs in the sixth. Six different Westerners recorded an RBI in the inning, including Billy Gerlott (Penn St), Jackson Taylor (Indiana St), Hank Thomas, Harrison Feinberg, Sam Mongelli and Joseph Skarad. The home team extended their lead to nineteen in the seventh off a Sam Mongelli two-run homer.

Valley's only source of offense came in a one-run second and sixth inning. Danbury's twenty-one runs are the most by any team this season. It also breaks Danbury's franchise single-game scoring record. The Westerners twenty-one runs fell five short of the NECBL record.

Danbury looks to repeat today's result when it again hosts Valley tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.

North Adams SteepleCats vs Newport Gulls Doubleheader

McKenzie Stadium, Holyoke, Mass. - Both teams earned a win thanks to big innings as the North Adam SteepleCats (7-21) and Newport Gulls (18-11) split a doubleheader on Tuesday, July 12th, at McKenzie Stadium.

Game 1: SteepleCats 10 - Gulls 7

W - Anthony Germinerio 1-0 (George Washington): 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K

L - Kevin Seitter 2-1 (Quinnipiac): 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K

S - Will Hearn 1-1 (San Francisco): 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

A three-run fifth inning propelled the SteepleCats to victory with Hunter Pasqualini (Central Conn.) and Ryan Galanie (Wofford College) providing RBI singles to give their team a 10-6 advantage.

After a late start due to inclement weather, the SteepleCats blew things open with a five-run second inning, RBIs coming from a Vincent Bianchina (Northwestern) single, a Tommy DiTullio (Bryant) walk with the bases loaded, and two runs off a single from Galanie. North Adams added two additional runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead over the Gulls.

The Gulls came back in a big way, scoring six runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 7-6. Colton Ledbetter (Samford), Slate Alford (Mississippi St.), and Spencer Smith (Northeastern) drove in runs in the inning as Newport was helped along by a few wild pitches and a hit batter in the inning.

Galanie led the SteepleCats offensively, going 2-for-4 on the night with three RBIs while Alford paved the way for Newport, hitting his fourth home run while going 2-for-4 and scoring twice.

Game 2: Gulls 11 - SteepleCats 3

W - Logan Mcguire 4-1 (Georgia Tech): 4.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

L - Kaleb Sophy 0-6 (Shippensburg): 2.0 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

After going down early in game one of the doubleheader, Newport outhit North Adams 13-6, coming out the gate with a seven-run inning in the top of the second. The Gulls strung together seven hits in the inning, taking advantage of two walks and an error by the SteepleCat's second baseman. The lead would prove too big to overcome as North Shore was unable to overcome the initial deficit.

The Gulls were led offensively by Alec Makarewicz (East Carolina) who went 3-for-5 including a double, three RBIs, and one run. Alford also had another exceptional outing, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored while Jack Scanlon (Oregon) went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored.

The Gulls return to action on Wednesday, July 13th, with a home matchup against the Bristol Blues beginning at 6:35 p.m. The SteepleCats take a day off before playing the Bristol Blues on Thursday, July 14th, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Old Mountain Field in Kingston, R.I. - The Mystic Schooners (18-11) held on for a 6-5 victory in a close divisional game against the Ocean State Waves (15-16).

Down 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Mystic made the most out of its opportunity to strike. Joseph Jaconski (North Carolina) and Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) led off with singles. With two outs Kevin Ferrer (Connecticut) hit an RBI single to tie the game. After Ferrer and Donofrio advanced on a passed ball, they were both driven in on a Michael Bello (Auburn) 2-run single. Tristan McAllister (Mount Saint Mary's) followed that up with an RBI single to make it 4-1. Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield) hit a home run to extend the Schooners' lead to five.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Khyree Miller (Winthrop) hit an RBI single to make it 6-2. In the next inning, Justin Long (Rice), and Jake Studley (Connecticut) walked, which set up for a Peter Ciufredda (Lafayette) 3-run home run.

From the seventh inning on, each bullpen locked it down. For Ocean State, Brooks Ey (Virginia Commonwealth) threw two innings without a hit or walk along with three strikeouts, then Nicholas Conte (Duke) threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts. For Mystic, Ken Turner (Bryant), Bowen Baker (Fairfield), and Connor Harris combined for three hitless innings with one walk.
