Austin Turfcats News Release

AUSTIN, Texas - Another week, another highly anticipated rematch but this time its with the Texas Pirates (1-4), who under new ownership assume the new name Texas Hurricans. The Austin Turfcats (5-2) take on the Hurricanes Saturday on the Turfcats home field where they are 4-1 this season. Although this is a rematch between the franchises, the Hurricanes have added several new key players.

The Turfcats are coming off a 60-43 loss to the top ranked Louisiana Swashbucklers (7-1) in Lake Charles, La. The first half was the highest scoring half in the Southern Indoor Football League's short history with a half time score of 37-36. The Turfcats scored first and held the lead for the majority of the first half but turnovers and penalties plagued the team and the Swashbucklers took the lead for good with one second remaining in the half. The Turfcats were only able to score seven points in the second half while the Swashbucklers scored 23 to become the uncontested first place team in the league.

The Hurricanes gave the Houma Conquerors (1-5) their only win of the season in their last game on June 6. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime but the Conquerors threw two touchdown passes, one for 30 and one for 40 yards, to make the game 27-14. The Hurricanes then scored a touchdown but so did the Conquerors for a final score of 34-20.

While both these teams are from Texas, there is no Lone Star State camaraderie between the Turfcats and the Hurricanes. While the Turfcats offense was out of sync in the first matchup, they still came out on top 38-20. Deron Ellis finished with 134 yards including two touchdowns, a 25-yarder to Darrick Wallace and a 7-yarder to Nick Lewis. Robert Quiroga had a 5-yard rushing score, Corry Perez returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown, and Darren Brown hit two field goals, including a 32-yarder. Hurricanes quarterback Trumaine Dorsey accounted for all three touchdowns, throwing scores to Chris Miller and Miguel Touron in addition to his rushing score.

This game will prove to be a heated battle with both teams out to prove who is the best in Texas.
