Boston Cannons News Release
Rochester, NY - A hat trick by Davey Emala and a six-goal first quarter led the Boston Cannons to a 13-6 victory over the Rochester Rattlers at Wegman's Sports Complex on Saturday evening.
The victory marked the second straight for the Cannons and also gave them the season series sweep over the Rattlers. Boston has also swept Chesapeake and Atlanta in season play this year.
"This was a huge team win on the road against a very strong Rochester team. The defense was the backbone along with Tyler Fiorito in net. The offense produced in transition and during six versus six play at very key moments," said Head Coach Sean Quirk following the win.
Jordan Wolf and John Ranagan opened the scoring for the Rattlers giving them an early 2-0 lead. Two minutes later, Justin Turri tied the game for the Cannons at 2-2 with a huge two-pointer.
Rochester took a 3-2 lead as Wolf tallied his second of the night before the Cannons came alive. Rochester would not score for the next 41 minutes of play. The Cannons held the second highest scoring offense in the league silent for a majority of the night.
It was Will Manny who tied the game this time, before the Cannons went on an eight goal run continuing to the end of the third quarter. Brent Adams and Davey Emala also scored in the opening frame.
Kylor Bellistri scored the lone goal of the second quarter, tallying his third of his MLL career. The Cannons led 7-3 at the half.
It was all Cannons during the third quarter. The Boston defense kept the Rattlers quiet. Brodie Merrill had a huge game, picking up eight ground balls and caused three turnovers.
From Merrill's play, the rest of the defense clicked in front of Tyler Fiorito. The Cannons limited the transition play of Rochester and dominated on the face-off X to take control of the possession play.
During the final quarter, the Rattlers attempted to scrounge up a weak comeback. It was too late. Rochester scored four times in the final frame, but Davey Emala finished off his strong night with a hat trick. Kevin Buchanan and Max Seibald also scored in the last quarter to give the Cannons the 13-7 victory.
"The defense set the tone by making it really hard for the Rattlers to score. Tyler Fiorito made some awesome saves, especially early on to prevent their offense from gaining momentum. As an offense, we tried to play within ourselves and make the right lacrosse plays. We were really sharp on the six versus six and were able to capitalize in transition. Overall, it is outstanding to come to Rochester and get a win. At this point in the season, every game is huge," Davey Emala said following the game.
Joe Nardella went 13-for-23 at the face-off X. Will Manny had a six point performance with two goals and four assists. Brent Adams also found his way to the back of the net twice during the win.
Tyler Fiorito stopped 12 saves to get the win for the Cannons. Several of his saves were game changers as he completely stymied the Rochester defense. Brodie Merrill was named the Coca-Cola player of the game.
The Cannons are now 6-5 on the season with three games to go. Following the All-Star break next weekend, they will face the Ohio Machine on the road before playing their final two games at home against the New York Lizards and the Florida Launch.
