Texas takes flight at ABA All-Star Game

January 28, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Texas Tycoons News Release

Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada - If the horde of kids lined up for autographs from slam dunk champion Donnie Beacham (6'5''-F-81, college: Texas Arlington ) was any indication, the American Basketball Association succeeded in making a legion of new fans on Saturday night at Halifax Metro Centre.

Beacham brought the estimated crowd of 2,500 to its feet with the night's most electrifying dunk: the Texas Tycoons forward threw the ball off the backboard, caught it while soaring over a group of six huddled children in Halifax Rainmen T-shirts and slammed it home.

Judges tossed out their numbers and let the fans pick the dunk-off winner, and a huge roar lifted Beacham over runner-up Rob Sanders.

"I've been in a couple of dunk contests before, and I know that the way to win is to get the crowd into it," said Beacham , who also tried having a fan throw him an alley-oop from the second row. "I figured doing that with the kids would help the crowd have a better reception for me."

Beacham leads the ABA West All-Stars today against the East and is looking to add another piece of hardware to his collection on his way back to North Texas. An All-Star game MVP award would be nice, but Beacham would prefer an ABA Championship this season with Texas.

Beacham 's Texas Tycoons will be attempting to go to 17-5 with a February 2nd match-up with the Waco Wranglers. The Tycoons - Wranglers game will be played at the Martin Luther King Center at 5565 Truman Drive in Fort Worth. Tip off is scheduled for 730pm Friday, 2/2/07. This will mark the first appearance of the #4 ranked team in the ABA this season in Fort Worth. You can get more information at www.txtycoons.com or by calling (214)749-0134
