TEXAS LEAGUE NOTES


TRAVELERS NOTES

The Trav ‚¬â„¢s began the week on a sour note on August 23rd, allowing 18 hits in a 13-6 loss to Midland. In the game, DH Derrick Gibson was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and 3B Casey Smith was 2-for-5 with two RBI ‚¬Â¦The Trav ‚¬â„¢s opened a four-game series with El Paso on August 25th with a 2-1 set back. Starting pitcher Willie Collazo tossed a fine game, despite being tagged with the loss. He threw seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out seven batters ‚¬Â¦On August 26th, Arkansas was shut out by El Paso 6-0. P Corey Lee had a fine game despite being tagged with the loss. Lee tossed seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out eight batters. The offense couldn ‚¬â„¢t help out the pitchers strong performance, producing just four hits in the loss ‚¬Â¦Arkansas dropped their fourth straight game to El Paso on August 27th, losing 5-4. Reliever Scott Schneider threw two consecutive wild pitches with two outs in the ninth inning which allowed a Diablo base runner to move up from second base and then score the decisive run. The two pitching gaffs overshadowed fine offensive nights from 2B Rudy Gomez, who hit a home run and LF Nick Gorneault, who was 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI ‚¬Â¦Arkansas ended their four game losing skid with a 4-1 win over El Paso on August 28th. Rudy Gomez hit a home run for the second time in two games, a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Starting P Joe Saunders tossed six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out six batters to earn his fourth win as a Traveler. Closer Steve Andrade earned his eighth save for Arkansas, tossing two innings and allowing just one hit, no runs and four strikeouts ‚¬Â¦Down 8-0 to Midland on August 29th, all seemed lost for the Travelers. The Arkansas batters didn ‚¬â„¢t quit, however, as they came back to tie the game 8-8 before losing in extra innings 9-8. Strong play from DH Derrick Gibson, who was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs scored helped the Travs to overcome the early deficit. Also contributing at the plate were LF Nick Gorneault, who had a two-run triple and scored two runs and SS Alberto Callaspo, who was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in the loss.


DIABLOS NOTES

Frisco completed a four game sweep of the Diablos August 23rd, as they took the final game of the series 13-6. In the loss, CF Marland Williams and C Mike DiRosa each hit a home run and LF Victor Hall extended his hit streak to 15 games ‚¬Â¦The Diablos ended their four game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Arkansas on August 25th. RF Mike Goss hit a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run. LF Victor Hall drove in the other Diablo run in the third inning. On the mound, Matt Chico won his third game for the Diablos, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing just five hits and only one run, while striking out six batters. Closer Jason Bulger picked up his seventh save, after tossing the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs ‚¬Â¦On August 26th the Diablos used a strong start from Cling Goocher to beat Arkansas 6-0. Goocher tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits and no runs for his sixth win as a Diablo. On offense, 2B Todd West and SS Keoni DeRenne each knocked in two runs. RF Carlos Quentin took a pitch off his helmet to tie the minor-league record for times hit in a season with 40. Class-A Rancho Cucamonga ‚¬â„¢s Mike Campo was hit 40 times to set the record in 2002 ‚¬Â¦The Diablos beat Arkansas 5-4 on August 27th thanks to two ninth inning wild pitches from an Arkansas reliever. SS Keoni DeRenne, who was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, moved from second to third and then came home on the wild pitches, scoring the game winning run. On the mound, Aric Leclair tossed two perfect relief innings to win his fourth game of the season. Closer Jason Bulger earned his eighth save after allowing one hit and no runs in the ninth inning ‚¬Â¦P Phil Stockman returned from representing Australia at the Olympics, only to lose to Arkansas on August 28th. The Travs' beat El Paso 4-1, thanks to a three-run home run from 2B Rudy Gomez in the fourth inning. Stockman tossed 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and four runs and was tagged with the loss. P Chris Cervantes kept his team in the game with a great relief outing, tossing 3.2 perfect innings... RF Carlos Quentin, who is known for crowding the plate, was beaned two times on August 28th, giving him 42 hit-by-pitches this season, setting a new minor-league record ‚¬Â¦The Diablos lost to Frisco 6-2 on August 29th. DH Carlos Quentin hit a home run in the loss.


ROUGHRIDERS NOTES

On August 23rd, the RoughRiders completed their four-game sweep of El Paso with a 13-6 win. Frisco had a season high 21 hits, as all nine batters recorded at least one hit. Leading the way was RF Rick Asadoorian, who was 5-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored. 2B Jason Bourgeois also had a big night going 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBI and one run scored. SS Santiago Perez added three hits and two runs, while 3B Edgar Gonzalez and DH Tydus Meadows each knocked in two runs. On the mound, John Hudgins won his fifth game of the season, tossing seven innings, allowing five hits and three runs ‚¬Â¦On August 25th, the RoughRiders won their fifth straight game with an 11-inning, 4-3 win over Midland. Frisco gave up a run in the top of the 11th inning to fall behind 3-2. In the bottom of the frame, pinch-runner Mike Curry scored the tying run on C Julio Mosquera ‚¬â„¢s double. CF Juan Senreiso, who was 3-for-5 with a double in the game, scored the game-winning run after Midland P Marcus Gwyn threw the ball past Midland C Jeremy Brown on a comebacker off the bat of Frisco ‚¬â„¢s 2B Jason Bourgeois. On the mound, Kelvin Jimenez tossed 5.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits and one run. Jimenez came into the game in the second inning after Texas Ranger Jeff Nelson pitched one inning in a rehab start. The win was credited to P Luis Marcano, his first Double-A win, after he tossed the final two innings, allowing three hits and one run ‚¬Â¦The RoughRiders were held to four hits on August 26th, losing to Midland 5-1. CF Juan Senreiso had two of the four hits, one of which was a solo-home run in the eighth inning ‚¬Â¦The RoughRiders lost their second straight game to Midland on August 27th, losing to the RockHounds 8-4. In the loss, DH Tydus Meadows was 3-for-4 with a run scored; CF Juan Senreiso was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and SS Ian Kinsler hit a home run ‚¬Â¦P John Hudgins was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma on August 27th, he will be replaced by P Nick Massett, who was 6-5 with a 3.51 ERA for Class-A Stockton ‚¬Â¦Frisco ended their short two game slide with a 7-3 win over Midland on August 28th. 3B Edgar Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. C Julio Mosquera also chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance that included two doubles and an RBI. Starting Edwin Moreno allowed six hits and three runs in six innings of work to earn his fourth win for Frisco. P Ray Beasley notched his seventh save of the season after tossing two perfect relief innings ‚¬Â¦Frisco opened a four-game series against El Paso on August 29th with a 6-2 win. RF Tydus Meadows was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Also providing offense were C Julio Mosquera and 3B Edgar Gonzalez who each belted home runs of their own. Texas Rangers ‚¬â„¢ P Juan Dominguez tossed the first two innings in a rehab start. He allowed just one hit and no runs, while striking out three batters. P Nick Masset made his Double-A debut, tossing five innings, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out four batters to earn his first win as a RoughRider. Frisco enters the last week of the regular season one win shy of clinching the East division second-half title.


ROCKHOUNDS NOTES

The Hounds won their last regular-season home game of the year on August 23rd, an 18-hit, 13-6 win over Arkansas. All nine batters recorded at least one hit and one run in the win. Their leading hitter was LF Jon Weber, who was 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBI. CF Steve Stanley was also deadly at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored. On the mound, P Steven Bondurant won his second game for Midland, tossing six innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Closer Marcus Gwyn threw three innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run as he earned his twelfth save of the season ‚¬Â¦On August 23rd, the RockHounds announced their team award winners. John Baker and Jon Weber were named co-MVPs for the 2004 season. P Shane Bazzell was honored as the RockHounds pitcher of the year and P Brad Weis received the Community Achievement Award ‚¬Â¦On August 25th, Midland lost to Frisco 4-3. The ‚¬ËœHounds came back from a 2-0 deficit, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Midland scored what looked to be the game winning run, however, Frisco scored two in the bottom of the 11th to pull out the victory. In the loss, LF Jon Weber was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three walks ‚¬Â¦Midland got back in the win column on August 26th with a 5-1 victory over Frisco. Starting P Shane Bazzell tossed 8.2 innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while striking out 11 batters. The performance gave Bazzell his 13th win of the season, which tied him with former Tulsa Driller Jeff Francis for the league lead. On offense, DH Steve Jackson and SS Omar Quintanilla each knocked in two runs and RF Nelson Cruz extended his hitting streak to 14 games ‚¬Â¦On August 27th, the RockHounds won their second straight game over Frisco with an 8-4 win. RF Nelson Cruz provided most of the offense with a 2-for-5 game that included a double, home run and four RBI. Jon Weber was also 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Mark Kiger was 3-for-4 with a run scored ‚¬Â¦Midland moved back into the loss column on August 28th, with a 7-3 defeat at the hands of Frisco. In the loss, RF Nelson Cruz was 3-for-4 with a home run and LF Brian Sellier was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI ‚¬Â¦ On August 29th, Midland blew an 8-0 lead to Arkansas, but won the game in extra innings 9-8. Nelson Cruz, who was 3-for-6 with four RBI, won the game in the top of the 10th inning with an RBI single. Closer Huston Street shut down Arkansas over two innings, allowing no hits or runs to earn his first victory as a RockHound. Also chipping in on offense were CF Jon Weber who was 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI; C Steve Jackson, who was 4-for-5 with a home run and LF Brian Sellier, who scored three runs.


EXPRESS NOTES

Round Rock ‚¬â„¢s five game win streak came to an end on August 23rd, with a 4-3 loss to Wichita. In the contest, 1B Todd Self was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored. RF Luke Scott was also 2-for-4 with a double, and a run scored in the defeat ‚¬Â¦On August 25th, Round Rock beat Tulsa 3-2 and increased their West division lead over San Antonio to 2.5 games. 2B Brooks Conrad hit a home run and scored two runs and RF Luke Scott hit a two-run home run in the win. On the mound, P Ezequiel Astacio won his 11th game of the season and set a Round Rock single season record for strikeouts. Astacio struck out six Tulsa batters in 6.2 innings, giving him 173 on the year. P Santiago Ramirez tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out four batters, as he earned his 32nd save of the season ‚¬Â¦Round Rock continued their march towards the postseason with a 6-3 win over Tulsa on August 26th. In his Double-A debut, P Fernando Nieve tossed 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out five batters to pick up the win. Nieve was called up on August 24th from Class-A Salem where he was 10-6 with a 2.96 ERA. On offense, CF Charlton Jimerson broke the game open with a grand slam in the fourth inning that put the Express up 6-0. 2B Brooks Conrad also chipped in going 2-for-4 with an RBI ‚¬Â¦Round Rock inched closer to a second half title with a 6-0 win over Tulsa on August 27th. 1B Kevin Orie was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. RF Todd Self also had two doubles and two RBI on a 2-for-4 night. SS David Mantranga added a home run and two runs scored to the Round Rock victory. On the mound, D.J. Houlton pitched seven innings allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out six batters to earn his 11th win of the season. Houlton has allowed only two runs in his past three games, a span of 19.2 innings ‚¬Â¦The Express ‚¬â„¢s four-game win streak came to an end on August 28th, as Round Rock lost to Tulsa 6-5. In the loss, Todd Self was 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, while 2B Brooks Conrad also hit a homer. OF Luke Scott was 3-for-5 with an RBI in the loss ‚¬Â¦Round Rock pulled off another late inning win on August 29th as 2B Brooks Conrad hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to giving the Express a 3-2 win over Wichita. With the win, the Express have now won 18 of their past 22 games and have a two-game lead over San Antonio heading into the last week of regular season play. Round Rock starter Jared Gothreaux had a great game, tossing 7.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, but did not receive a decision. P Santiago Ramirez picked up the win, his sixth, after tossing two relief innings, allowing just one hit and no runs ‚¬Â¦Willy Taveras, the leading hitter in the Texas League, missed his fourth straight game on August 29th, with strep throat. C Hector Gimenez is out indefinitely with a sprained left ankle that he suffered sliding into second base against Tulsa on August 28th.


MISSIONS NOTES

On August 23rd, the Missions beat Tulsa 4-3 to take the four-game series three games to one. At the plate 3B Hunter Brown was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the win. Also chipping in were, DH Shin-soo Choo and SS Eddy Menchaca who each had two hits and scored a run. The Missions jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and then held on thanks to strong pitching performances. Starter Rich Dorman won his seventh game, tossing five innings and allowing four hits and three runs, while striking out seven batters. Jared Thomas then tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and Rick Guttormson tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs as he picked up his 22nd save of the season ‚¬Â¦ The Missions started their 12-game homestand on August 25th with a 5-0 loss to Wichita. In the setback, Shin-soo Choo went 2-for-3. Raising his hit total in 2004 to 147. Choo ‚¬â„¢s 147 hits ties A.J. Zapp ‚¬â„¢s record for hits in a season by a Missions player since the Seattle Mariners became the Missions parent club in 2001 ‚¬Â¦San Antonio swept a doubleheader from Wichita on August 26th, winning both games in their last at bat. In the first game, C Brian Moon led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple. 2B Rob Gandolfo then knocked in pinch runner Jack Arroyo to give the Missions a 1-0 win. Felix Hernandez had a great start, tossing all seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out seven batters. In the second game, DH Jaime Bubela knocked in 1B John Lindsey from second base, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give San Antonio a 2-1 win. Gandolfo had a big game again, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. On the mound, Chris Key had a fine no-decision start, tossing six innings and allowing six hits and one run. The win went to reliever Rick Guttormson, who allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings of work ‚¬Â¦San Antonio fell to Wichita 3-1 on August 27th, as a result falling three games behind Round Rock in the West division race. The Missions were held to six hits in the loss, two of which came off the bat of DH Jaime Bubela ‚¬Â¦On August 28th, San Antonio found themselves down 2-0 to Wichita entering the eighth inning. The Missions had three hits up to that point, but got the hot bats going as they rallied with four hits and three runs to beat the Wranglers 3-2. SS Eddy Menchaca knocked in the first run of the inning. RF Shin-soo Choo followed with a well-placed single down the left-field foul line to score two runs. With the win, and a Round Rock loss, San Antonio kept their playoff hopes alive, as they moved within two games of the division lead ‚¬Â¦The Missions opened a four-game series against Tulsa on August 29th with a 4-0 shutout win. San Antonio blasted three home runs in the first inning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. LF Dustin Delucchi hit a lead off solo-home run, 1B John Lindsey followed suit and then DH Jaime Bubela knocked a two-run shot. In his first start since representing Canada at the Olympics, P Phil Devey was almost unhitable, allowing just three hits and no runs in seven innings of work, as he was credited with his second win of the season. Reliever Renee Cortez threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. With seven games remaining in the season the Missions sit two games back of Round Rock for the West division crown. The two teams will play a season ending four-game set beginning on September 2nd.


DRILLERS NOTES

The Drillers lost their regular-season home-finale to San Antonio 4-3 on August 23rd. Down 4-0 after two innings, Tulsa rallied for three runs but couldn ‚¬â„¢t complete the comeback. 1B Ryan Shealy was 1-for-2 with a home run, his 29th of the season ‚¬Â¦The Drillers opened a 12-game road trip on August 25th with a 3-2 loss to Round Rock. P Zach McClellan had a fine game, both from the mound and at the plate. McClellan scored one of Tulsa's two runs and was the only Driller batter to have more than one hit. Zach took the loss despite allowing just five hits in seven innings ‚¬Â¦Tulsa lost their second straight to Round Rock on August 26th, losing 6-3. In the loss, LF Cory Slavik was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple ‚¬Â¦The Drillers were shutout on August 27th, losing to Round Rock 6-0. Tulsa was held to just four hits in the loss ‚¬Â¦On August 28th, the Drillers ended a three-game skid against Round Rock, winning 6-5 and preventing a series sweep. Tulsa came back from a 3-0 deficit thanks to a Sean Barker grand slam in the sixth inning. The Drillers added two more runs and held on to win 6-5. On the mound, P Mike Esposito had a fine start, tossing seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs as he earned his ninth win of the season. Closer Ryan Speier, was unusually shaky, allowing four hits and two runs in 1.1 innings of work as Round Rock put together a rally in the ninth inning. Speier got the last batter to pop up, with two runners on, to earn his minor-league leading 36th save of the season ‚¬Â¦ On August 29th, the Drillers began a four-game series against San Antonio with a 4-0 loss. Tulsa batters were held to just four hits in the game. DH Ryan Shealy had one of those four hits to extend his current hitting streak to nine games.


WRANGLERS NOTES

On August 23rd, the Wranglers used a strong pitching performance and a four-run inning to beat Round Rock 4-3. P Kyle Middleton won his third straight game to improve to 8-8. He tossed eight innings, allowing nine hits and three runs in the win. Closer Jorge Vasquez, recently sent back to Wichita from Kansas City, tossed a scorelss ninth inning as he saved his 16th game of the season. On offense, 1B Chad Santos was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. CF Norris Hopper was 2-for-3, knocking in two runs and SS Andres Blanco, 3B Justin Gemoll and LF Brett Groves each had two hits in the win ‚¬Â¦On August 25th, 1B Chad Santos knocked in three of Wichita ‚¬â„¢s five runs as the Wranglers opened a five-game series at San Antonio with a 5-0 win. Santos had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and then belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning that put Wichita up 4-0. CF Norris Hopper was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and SS Andres Blanco and C Scott Walter each had two hits and scored a run in the win. On the mound, P Danny Tamayo won his 11th game of the season, tossing five innings, allowing just three hits and no runs ‚¬Â¦ On August 26th the Wranglers were swept in a doubleheader against San Antonio, losing both games by one run on the Missions' last at-bats. In a 1-0 loss in the opener, Denny Bautista had a fine start, despite being tagged with the loss. He allowed just five hits and one run in six innings of work. In the second game, a 2-1 loss, P Thad Markray also had a fine outing, tossing eight innings, allowing three hits and one run, while striking out nine batters. He did not factor in the decision ‚¬Â¦The Wranglers beat San Antonio 3-1 on August 27th. 1B Chad Santos hit a solo-home run, his 20th of the season, in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie. C Scott Walter, who was 3-for-4, singled in an insurance run in the sixth to give Wichita a 3-1 lead. Starter Brian Bass tossed four strong innings, allowing four hits and one run. P Billy Keppinger was credited with the win, after he tossed two relief innings, during which he allowed just two hits and no runs ‚¬Â¦On August 28th, the Wranglers blew a late 2-0 lead and lost to San Antonio 3-2. Wichita appeared that they were heading for the win after 3B Justin Gemoll hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning. However, the pitching staff couldn ‚¬â„¢t hold the lead as San Antonio pulled off the comeback by scoring three runs off four hits in the eighth inning ‚¬Â¦Wichita opened a four-game set with Round Rock on August 29th with a 3-2 10-inning loss. In the game, DH Corey Hart was 2-for-3 with an RBI and 1B Chad Santos hit his 21st home run of the season.

Mike DiFelice ('95) hit .304 with two doubles and three RBI this past week for Toledo...Dallas McPherson ('04) had a Salt Lake high .387 batting average with four doubles and four RBI this past week...Rick Ankiel ('99) earned a win on August 24th for Tennessee, allowing no runs over five innings of work.


DIABLOS ALUMNI

Pawtucket's Byung-Hyun Kim ('99) tossed five shutout innings, yiedling one hit with six strikeouts on August 27th...On August 25th, Brian Dallimore ('01)had three hits, including a home run, and drove in five runs in Fresno's win...Jared Patterson ('99) had three home runs and drove in seven runs for Omaha this past week...Kyle Nichols ('04) hit four home runs and drove in nine runs this past week for Tucson. Also for the Sidewinders, Noochie Varner ('04) hit .364 with an on-base percentage of .481 and scored a team-high seven runs. Pitcher Mike Gosling ('02) won two games for Tucson last week.


ROUGHRIDERS ALUMNI

Adrian Gonzalez ('04) hit .517 with a .516 on-base percentage this past week for Oklahoma.


ROCKHOUNDS ALUMNI

On August 28th, Chris Enochs ('02) allowed four hits in six innings of work to pick up the win for New Orleans...Nick Swisher ('03) batted .462, with four home runs and eight RBI for Sacramento this past week. Also for the River Cats, P Mike Ziegler ('04) had a rough week, losing both of his starts.


EXPRESS ALUMNI

Travis Smith ('01) worked 5.1 innings on August 28th, as he earned his 10th victory for Richmond...Tim Redding ('01) allowed one earned run over six innings on August 29th for New Orleans.


MISSIONS ALUMNI

Las Vegas's Antonio Perez ('02) led the team to four wins last week after hitting .321, with two home runs and 11 RBI, while scoring five times...Ken Huckaby ('01) batted .435 with four doubles and eight RBI this past week for Oklahoma...Salt Lake's Adam Riggs ('96) smacked three home runs and drove in seven runs. Riggs has 29 homers for Salt Lake, a team high...P Gustavo Martinez ('03) had a rough week, losing both of his starts for Tacoma. P Randy Williams ('03) fared better for the Rainiers, allowing no runs in 3.2 innings of work over two relief appearances...John Castellano ('03) hit a game winning home run for Reading on August 26th...Manny Ulloa ('03) allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work on August 28th to earn the victory for Visalia.


DRILLERS ALUMNI

Matt Whiteside ('92) saved four games for Richmond last week, increasing his total to an International League leading 36...Colorado Springs won six of seven last week thanks in part to Andy Tracy ('04) who went 9-for-27 with four home runs, eight RBI, five walks and scored nine runs...Rob Sasser ('99) hit .375 with a pair of homers and eight RBI this past week for Birmingham.


WRANGLERS ALUMNI

In Albuquerque's one win this past week, Joe Dillon ('01) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI...Brandon Berger ('04) had three home runs and drove is six runs this past week for Omaha...

CLINT GOOCHER

EL PASO DIABLOS

An outstanding effort by El Paso starter Clint Goocher has earned the 22-year old left-hander Texas League Pitcher of the Week honors. On August 26th, against Arkansas, Goocher tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits and no runs. He struck out three batters and walked just one to earn his sixth win of the season for the Diablos.

Goocher was born in Houston, TX in June 1982. He attended San Jacinto Junior College and was selected in the 31st round of the 2002 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Nelson Cruz's incredible play over the past week helped carry Midland to a 4-2 record and earn him Player of the Week honors. Cruz got the week off to a hot start on August 23rd with a 2-for-4, one RBI game in a win over Arkansas. On August 27th, Cruz was 2-for-5 with four RBI, a home run and a double as he lead Midland to an 8-4 victory. On the 28th, Midland lost, but Cruz went 3-for-4 with a home run. Cruz finished the week on August 29th with a game winning RBI single which gave Midland a 9-8 win over Arkansas. In that game, Cruz was 3-for-6 with four RBI and a home run. For the week, Cruz batted .414 and had a .759 slugging percentage, while he was first in the league in hits (12), RBI (10) and tied for first in home runs (3).

Nelson Cruz was born in Monte Cristi, D.R. in July 1980. He signed with the New York Mets in 1998 as a nondrafted free agent and was traded to the Oakland Athletics organization in 2000. This is his seventh year in minor league baseball and first at the Double-A level with Midland.

August 30, 1959 ‚¬Â¦Tulsa outfielders Jim Beauchamp and Jim Hickman were a two-man wrecking crew in the Oilers 15-3 pasting of Victoria. Hickman drove in six of his club ‚¬â„¢s runs with just two hits in six at-bats, while Beauchamp was a perfect 5 for 5, hitting for the cycle and driving in five runs. August 31, 1955 ‚¬Â¦San Antonio southpaw Don Ferrarese hurled a 3-1, seven-inning, no-hit decision over Beaumont. The Exporters got their lone run in the first inning when Ferrarese walked four batters. September 1, 2002 ‚¬Â¦In a wild, season ending game, Round Rock finally got past San Antonio by scoring seven runs in the top of the 18th inning, winning 12-5. Round Rock set a Texas League record by using 10 pitchers in the long contest. The two-team total of 18 pitchers in a single game also set a new league mark. September 2, 1892 ‚¬Â¦Galveston used 17 hits to take a 19-1 victory from Houston. The winners blew the game open when they scored 10 runs in the fifth inning. September 3, 1964 ‚¬Â¦Brack Bailey drove in six runs with a pair of bases loaded triples, leading Albuquerque to a 12-9 decision over El Paso. September 4, 1929 ‚¬Â¦Waco ‚¬â„¢s Hank Thormahlen set a league high for the season when he struck out 15 San Antonio batters. Thormahlen allowed just three hits in the game, winning 4-0. September 5, 1948 ‚¬Â¦Tulsa blasted Fort Worth 17-4 behind the 6 for 6 hitting of their leadoff batter, second baseman Johnny Lane. Lane, who scored four times and drove in two runs, had a double and five singles as he led his team to a blowout win.
