September 25, 2021 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - Emiliano Terzaghi delivered the game-winner for the Richmond Kickers (7-8-7) in the third minute of extra time as the Reds defeated MLS-affiliate side, Toronto FC II (6-9-8) at the death in front of the largest crowd at City Stadium so far in 2021.
The match was underway on a gorgeous, Fall night in Richmond. Early in the match, Nil Vinyals played a through ball into the Toronto box with Terzaghi chasing it down. Terzaghi got to the ball and was free on goal but Caleb Patterson-Sewell made himself big and closed down the angle to deflect Terzaghi's shot away.
In the 10th minute, Jalen Crisler pinged a long pass over the Toronto defense from Richmond's own half. Matt Bolduc beat his mark to the ball and cut a pass inside to Ethan Bryant who took the shot in stride but it went over the crossbar.
After 20 minutes of back-and-forth play between the two squads, Richmond was awarded a free kick right outside of the Toronto box. Vinyals stepped over the kick and attempted to curl it over the wall into the near post, but his attempt spun just wide of the goal post.
Shortly after, Ivan Magalhães played a long ball over the top of the Toronto defense, Jonathan Bolanos turned on the burners and jostled his opponent off the ball to sneak into the six-yard box and lay a pass off to Terzaghi who tried to chip the keeper but the attempt was unsuccessful. The first half whistle was blown and neither side was able to find space for a go-ahead goal, 0-0.
Both squads stepped back onto the pitch after the halftime break, both hungry for a result and playing with the intensity to show it. In the 51st minute, Richmond was awarded a corner kick, Moran from the left, sent the ball into the near post and Terzaghi beat his mark to the ball and flicked it on behind him at goal, but the attempt fell wide of the goal.
The match was in its final ten minutes of regular time and Oalex Anderson made his way onto the pitch on the right wing to wreak havoc with his fresh legs and explosive pace.
Richmond earned a corner kick and the ball landed at the feet of Bolanos who took a volleyed stab at it, but the attempt went over the goal. Richmond continued to attack the Toronto goal relentlessly, with the clock winding down, Toronto FC II was awarded a free kick just outside of the box. The set-piece made its way into the danger area, but Akira Fitzgerald got his knuckles to the ball and punched away into safety.
At this point in the match, Richmond had statistically dominated the game in nearly every category, leading in possession, shots, and passing accuracy. But the scoreline didn't reflect the efforts and relentless energy the Reds poured into the pitch.
With only four minutes of stoppage time awarded, Terzaghi received the ball deep in his own half and pinged a long diagonal pass across the field to Bolanos, who set up for a long-range shot outside of the box. Bolanos' shot fizzed at Patterson-Sewell who did just enough to get a hand to it.
With Patterson-Sewell's deflection, Richmond was awarded a corner kick late into stoppage time. Moran stood at the corner flag with his hands raised to signify his kick. His in-swinging ball fell just above Terzaghi who leaped into the air to get a touch on the ball and flick it back at the goal, the ball took a deflection off of some players and Terzaghi scored in a fantastic display of resilience to bring the Reds to 1-0 and earn a much needed three points.
Richmond will return to City Stadium next Saturday, October 2nd to face league-leaders Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. The last time out, Richmond played Red Wolves in Chattanooga and fell short in the final minutes to a last-ditch, go-ahead goal for Red Wolves. This time around Richmond will enjoy the push from their home fans. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.
