Dubois County Bombers News Release
Three pivotal junctures defined the Terre Haute Rex's 4-1 win over the Dubois County Bombers Thursday night at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bombers seemed poised to score the game's first run after they had loaded the bases with only one out against Rex starter William Robinson. Bombers left fielder Landon Curry stepped up and lined a shot directly at Rex third baseman Jacob Hayes.
Hayes caught the ball and beat Bombers right fielder Brendan Neel - who had reached on his first hit of the season - back to the bag to end the threat.
Billy Timmerman would relieve Robinson to start the sixth and pitch two innings to earn the win.
Bombers starter Alex Britt was the hard-luck loser. After giving up a run in the seventh on a two-out walk and an RBI double by Hayes, he retired the first two Rex in the eighth.
Then his defense failed him.
Rex second baseman Nick Johnson reached when shortstop Frank Rawdow threw low to first. Rex right fielder Casey McCurdy then reached on a ball Bombers second baseman Bo Ausmus couldn't handle, and Britt's night was done after walking the next batter to load the bases.
Enter John Rashid, who had reported to the Bombers a few hours earlier.
He surrendered a two-run ground-ball single and allowed another run to score on a wild pitch to stake the Rex to a 4-0 lead. Britt's final line was seven and two-thirds innings and one earned run; Rashid pitched one and one-third innings while surrendering no earned runs.
The final critical spot in the game occurred in the Bombers' half of the ninth. They loaded the bases with no outs before Bo Ausmus hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Unfortunately for the Bombers, Rawdow was cut down at third trying to advance. Instead of having the tying run at the plate with one out in a 4-1 game, the Bombers could only send pinch hitter Adam Guinn with one on and two outs; he struck out swinging.
The Bombers fell to 8-1 on the season while the Rex improved to 5-4.
Dubois County heads to Terre Haute to play Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
