Ten current or former Destroyers play role in movie "Invincible"
August 25, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - When the movie "Invincible" opens today, Friday, August 25, Columbus Destroyers fans will see 10 current or former Destroyers players in theaters nationwide. The movie, which is based on the NFL career of Vince Papale of the Philadelphia Eagles (1976-78), stars Mark Wahlberg (as Papale) and Greg Kinnear (as Dick Vermeil).
Destroyers fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson and wide receiver/linebacker Eddie Galles, both of the 2006 team, were the most noticeable faces in the movie, as both were easily identified throughout the movie. In all, approximately 50 Arena Football League players took part in the making of the movie. A complete list of Destroyers players who participated in the movie, along with the role they played, is below.
This is not the first time AFL players have participated in football films. AFL players have also participated in "The Longest Yard," "The Waterboy" and "Any Given Sunday" as extras, teammates or the stars' body-doubles. This film is no different as Orlando Predators' wide receiver/linebacker Clif Dell and former Predators offensive specialist Travis McGriff play Wahlberg's body-double during the on-field action sequences.
"Invincible" tells the unlikely story of a down-on-his luck teacher and part-time bartender, Papale, who earned a roster spot on the Philadelphia Eagles after attending an open tryout. Open tryouts, a staple to the AFL, are held every off-season throughout the League. The Columbus Destroyers will be holding their next tryout on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Columbus FieldHouse from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. For more information on the open tryout, visit www.ColumbusDestroyers.com.
The Destroyers begin the road to ArenaBowl XXI in 2007 after a record setting season in 2006. The team is now accepting season ticket deposits from new customers for the 2007 season. Information regarding single game tickets will become available when the 2007 schedule is released this fall. For more information please call (614) 246-HITS.
