Teamwork Key into Dayton Moving into First Place in the FHL

December 8, 2013 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Dayton Demonz News Release

(Dayton, Ohio) This afternoon's victory over the Danville Dashers the Dayton Demonz moved into first place in the Federal Hockey League's (FHL) standings with 28 points, one point ahead of the idle Danbury Whalers. The Whalers have two games in hand on the Demonz, but what is most intriguing is the way the Demonz have bounced back over the past couple of weeks, winning games, and for the second straight night dominating the Dashers with today's 6-3 win over the frustrated Dashers.

Coach Karasiewicz and assistant coach Jack Collins were curious on how their team would respond this evening, as their young roster played the 4th game in as many days. Dayton's only blemish or loss in the 4 games was on Friday evening when they lost to the Dashers in Danville by a score of 7-4. The loss that evening can be contributed to the team getting away from the game plan, and the Dashers took full advantage of the Demonz, and made them pay for their mistakes, and lack of effort.

Coach Karasiewicz knowing his team would be exhausted today, wanted the team to keep their shifts short, get off to a strong start, and to keep things simple. Most importantly, Karasiewicz wanted the team to keep their feet moving, not taking a shift off, something that has hurt the Demonz at various times this year.

The Demonz had more energy than their coaches expected, and exceeded their expectations taking a 6-0 lead late in the 2nd period, Danville was not able to get on the board until with just over a minute left in the second frame. The score at the end of two periods of play Dayton led 6-1. Danville would score two more goals in the 3rd period, to make it final 6-3 Dayton.

Both teams having faced one another several times already this year, Dayton winning all but one of these games. The Dashers became a frustrated team became more and more frustrated with each Demonz goal today. Mid-way through the second period tonight, Danville took exception to Dayton mounting score 4-0, 5-0, 6-0, and became chipping or boarder line dirty, as numerous fights broke out, along with three un-sportsman penalties called (2 against Danville, 1 against Dayton). This type of play continued until the final buzzer rang, almost like a bell at the end of a boxing match, which included late hits, kneeing penalties, and a lot of chirping. And did I say more fights. The final analysis is these teams do not like each other.

The first period would end with Dayton leading 2-0. Justin Brausen and Lee McClure (his first of the year) led the way.

In the second period Dayton blew the game open taking a 6-0 lead until Roman Andrejev's of the Dashers goal late in the period cut the Demonz lead to 6-1 at the end of two periods of play. Dayton goal scorers in the 2nd were Anthony Battaglia, Brian Marks, and 2 goals by Austin Aiken.

In the third period Danville began to show a little life out shooting the Demonz 19 to 8, however the game was out of reach by this time and Demonz goaltender Jeff Rose was solid in the net for Dayton, to record his 2nd consecutive victory of the season. Danville goal scorers in the third period were Ryan Stern, with Andrejev scoring his second goal of the game.

Assistant coach for the Demonz stated at the end of the game "we are very happy with how the team played this evening, and their effort exceeded our expectations" talking about how the team showed energy, while working within head coach Karasiewicz's system.

Notes: Dayton was out shot by Danville this evening 41 - 40. Dayton went 3 for 7 on the power play, while the Dashers were 2 for 4 on their power play opportunities. There was a combination of 19 offenses called with a total of 76 penalty minutes between both teams. Stars of the game; 1st Star Austin Aiken (Dayton); 2nd Star Anthony Battaglia (Dayton), and 3rd Star Ahmed Mahfouz.
