Teamwork Key in Demonz 4-1 Win over Whalers

February 18, 2014 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Dayton Demonz News Release

(Dayton, Ohio) The Dayton Demonz did not disappoint their home fans tonight on their Presidents Day Monday evening game against the first place Danbury Whalers. The Demonz were able to pull out a 4-1 victory over the Whalers moving within 4 points of the Whalers (as both teams have played 37 games each) with a little more over a month to play in the Federal Hockey League regular season.

With both teams battling the choppy ice of Hara Arena tonight, the Demonz were the ones who created and took advantage of opportunistic scoring chances, while Demonz goaltender Matthew Kinsella provided solid goaltending, not giving the Whalers many secondary scoring chances.

Dayton drew first blood late in the first period, with under 3 minutes left in the initial frame; Roger Tagoona blasted one from the slot, after receiving a nice drop pass from Jesse Felten. The 1st period would end with Dayton leading 1-0.

Just 1 minute into the 2nd period, Dayton power-forward Robert Vanwynsberghe continued his torrid scoring pace since his arrival from Danville last month, giving Dayton a 2-0 lead. Just when Dayton seemed to be in control, Whaler Tim Richter's power-play goal cut the Dayton lead in half 2-1. Dayton was able to respond 2 minutes later (mid-way through the 2nd) as a determined Jesse Felten controlled the puck deep in the Danbury zone, cycling the puck to the front of the net to beat Whaler goaltender Mike Brown with a blast from the low slot, ripping it in top-shelf. Feten's goal ended the scoring for the period, as Dayton would take a 3-1 lead into the final period.

In the 3rd Felten would add his second goal of the evening just over 5 minutes into the final frame. Felten's tally was all the scoring for both teams in the period, and giving Dayton the character win with the 4-1 victory.

NOTES: The Stars of the game went to Dayton Demonz Jesse Felten (1st Star), Roger Tagoona (2nd Star), and the 3rd Star with to Demonz goalie Matthew Kinsella. Dayton will host Military Appreciation Night at Hara Arena on Friday evening, February 21st at 7:35p.m. in their game against the Danville Dashers. The Camo-style jerseys the Demonz players wear that evening will be auctioned off after the game. Proceeds from the auction will assist a military member's family, and the Ronald McDonald House located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Please come out and enjoy the evening with us as we salute and thank our military members.
