Teams to Dress 18th Player for all remaining games
Published on January 28, 2004 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League has announced that teams will now dress an additional runner (forward or defenseman) for all remaining games this season. The addition is effective immediately, and means that teams will have eighteen players dressed and eligible to play in each game. Team lineups will now consist of sixteen runners and two goaltenders. The team rosters will remain at 23 players. The decision to increase the number of dress players to eighteen was made by the league's Board of Governors and is effective for the remainder of the regular season and the 2004 Champion's Cup Playoffs. The rule will be reviewed during the off-season for permanent adoption.
"Adding the extra player will give coaches more depth on their bench when a player is injured during the game", said Brian Lemon, Vice President of Operations. "It will also allow teams to add an extra man to improve their offense, defense or transition game. We see it as a positive step forward."
