Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - April 9, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club have signed former Santa Clara College teammates Pat Peavey and Joey Gomes. The infielder Peavey was acquired in December from the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League and outfielder Gomes was acquired in January from the New Jersey Jackals of the Canadian-American League.

Peavey is entering his sixth season in professional baseball after being drafted in the 33rd round of the 2002 draft by the Houston Astros. He joined the Wild Things for the 2006 season after spending 2002 through 2005 at the single-A and double-A levels with the Astros. In 2006, the California native had 99 hits, 21 doubles, 52 runs scored, and led the Frontier league with 83 RBI. In 2004, Peavey set career highs with 131 hits and 25 doubles, while playing for Salem of the Carolina League.

Gomes, brother of Tampa Day Devil Rays outfielder Jonny Gomes, is entering his sixth professional season after being drafted by the Devil Rays in the eighth round of the 2002 draft. In 2005 with Visalia, he ranked second in the California League with 172 hits, third in games played with 133, and fourth with a .325 batting average, all setting career highs. The former New York Penn League All-Star began the 2006 season with Mobile of the Southern League before finishing with the Jackals.

"We acquired both Peavey and Gomes earlier this winter because we knew they had the talent to play in this league," said Bears Assistant General Manager Jim Cerny. "It's a great opportunity for these two players to play in a high-level independent league, and we look forward to watching them take advantage of it."

The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Fans attending all home games may park in the spacious parking garage located behind the wall in right field.
