Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The Atlanta Silverbacks and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers played to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Silverbacks (0-5-2) recorded their first shutout in 2011, which also resulted in the first scoreless game for the Strikers (1-2-4) this season.
The Strikers had a scoring opportunity in the 10th minute when midfielder Cristian Arrieta sent in a cross to defender Martyn Lancaster, but Lancaster's header harmlessly sailed over the crossbar. After the Silverbacks had a good chance at the other end, Strikers midfielder Mike Palacio returned toward an open Silverbacks net; midfielder Shane Moroney, however, denied his attempt with a strong slide tackle at the last moment.
The Silverbacks' best first-half scoring chance came in the 39th minute when a ball fell inside the box for midfielder Jordan Davis. The Peachtree City native's shot from close range ended up wide of the Strikers' right post.
Early in the second half, the Strikers' leading scorer, midfielder Eduardo Coudet, put a shot past Quintero, but it inched wide of the net, keeping the game scoreless. Raphael Cox followed with a strong shot for the Silverbacks at the other end, but goalkeeper Matt Glaeser was there to parry it wide.
The Silverbacks kept up the offensive pressure, and in the 68th minute, they came close to taking the lead. Mattias Schnorf's header from eight yards away fell inches wide, denying the Swiss midfielder his first goal in a Silverbacks uniform.
Despite an offensive push at the end of the game, the Silverbacks were unable to find the back of the net. Midfielder Lucas Paulini fired a long-range shot but was denied by Glaeser, and the game ended in a scoreless tie.
The Silverbacks travel to Cary, N.C., to take on the Carolina Railhawks next Saturday and will return home to host the NSC Minnesota Stars on Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m.
