Tano Tijerina to Pitch in First Sister Cities Classic
Laredo, TX - The Laredo Lemurs are excited to announce that Laredo born Tano Tijerina, will be the starting pitcher for the Lemurs in the inaugural "Family Chevrolet Sister Cities Baseball Classic" presented by Tecate, on September 26th at Uni-Trade Stadium.
In 1993, Tijerina was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round out of Navarro Junior College. Tijerina spent five years in the Brewers organization making it as high as Low-A ball for the Beloit Snappers, posting a 16-19 record, and a 6.48 ERA, in six seasons of professional baseball. In his third spring training with the Brewers he had elbow surgery which halted his career in professional baseball.
In 2009, at the age of 35, Tijerina played professionally with the Laredo Broncos, posting a 1-3 record and a 5.34 ERA in six starts for the team.
The "Family Chevrolet Sister Cities Baseball Classic" will be a two day event beginning on Wednesday, September 25th with a Sports Luncheon honoring the Tecolotes players of the past including an appearance by Bobby Rodriguez who was the right fielder for the 1977 Mexican League Champions.. Also on display will be over many historical photographs and memorabilia from almost 100 years of history of baseball in Laredo and Nuevo Laredo.
Later that evening, employees from the City of Laredo and employees from Nuevo Laredo will play against each other in the Gateway Cup softball game. Following the softball game will be the Tecate Homerun Derby where members of the Lemurs and Tecos will compete for the title of Home Run Derby Champion. Admission to the softball game and Home Run Derby is FREE.
Tickets for the "Family Chevrolet Sister Cities Baseball Classic" presented by Tecate are $5.00 for general admission, $7.00 for reserved seats and $10.00 for box seats. Suites and group tickets are available by calling 956- 7LEMURS or by visiting the Uni-Trade Stadium box office.
