Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - A three-run eighth inning helped the Tampa Yankees (12-11) fight back and defeat the Bradenton Marauders (14-8) 4-2 on Sunday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The scoring began after a lengthy rain delay that started in the top of the second and lasted an hour and a half. Due to the delay, the high-A debut of RHP Travis Hissong was cut short. Hissong lasted one and two-third scoreless innings, walking three and striking out one while not surrendering a hit in his first start with the Tampa Yankees.
The Yankees broke a scoreless tie in the third against reliever Matt Benedict. Jake Cave slapped a two-out double down the left field line and later scored on a single by Cito Culver.
Bradenton quickly responded off RHP Stefan Lopez in the fourth. A hit-by-pitch, a walk and a sacrifice bunt placed runners at second and third before Ashley Ponce delivered an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.
LHP Ramon Benjamin entered the game in the fifth and quickly gave up the go-ahead run. Adam Frazier hit a leadoff single and advanced on a wild pitch. Max Moroff followed with an RBI single to right, giving the Marauders a 2-1 lead.
A couple of Bradenton defensive miscues helped the T-Yanks rally in the eighth off reliever Ryan Hafner (1-3).
Cave reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. An errant throw by catcher Jacob Stallings sailed into center field, allowing Cave to reach third. Culver then singled to right, tying the game at 2-2. Aaron Judge followed by lifting a fly ball down the left field line. Left fielder Walker Gourley could not locate the ball and Judge ended up with a double. With Dante BichetteJr at the plate, Culver scored on a wild pitch by Hafner. Judge later scored an RBI single from Yeicok Calderon.
RHP Cesar Vargas (1-0) faced the minimum in two innings of relief, striking out three.
Bichette went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 16 games and his on-base streak to 25. Cave went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Claudio Custodio picked up two infield singles and finished 3-for-3.
The series wraps up on Monday at 7:00 p.m. as southpaw MiguelSulbaran (1-1, 2.36 ERA) takes the hill for the T-Yanks. RHP John Kuchno (4-8, 3.98 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Marauders.
